Kylian Mbappe leaves France game covered in blood as fans shower forward with whistles

France and the Netherlands played out a 0-0 draw in their second Group D game of Euro 2024, a result that all but guaranteed both teams a place in the last 16.

Antoine Griezmann, captaining the side with Kylian Mbappe on the bench after breaking his nose against Austria, had an excellent chance in each half but twice stumbled over the ball.

Both sets of fans had cause to celebrate - the Dutch when Xavi Simons found the net in the second half and the French when the effort was ruled out for offside - and, despite both sides pushing for a winner, they had to be content with a point each.

France and the Netherlands are level on four points at the top of the group standings, with Austria on three, while Poland have no points and cannot advance. France face Poland in their final group game with the Dutch taking on Austria.

Netherlands 0-0 France

72 mins: Now then. The goal had been disallowed following the assistant referee raising the offside flag against Denzel Dumfries who wasn’t in the eyeline of the goalkeeper apparantly.

VAR checks the incident and agrees with that assessment. The goal is ruled out!

GOAL! Netherlands 1-0 France (Simons, 69’)⚽️

69 mins: Breakthrough!

Just as France were imposing themselves, Cody Gakpo comes into the box from the left and slots the ball to Memphis Depay. He spins and shoots forcing a sharp save out of Mike Maignan.

The rebound comes out to Xavi Simons on the edge of the box and he drills a low effort into the bottom corner!

Netherlands 0-0 France

66 mins: Close!

France just can’t get the ball into the net. Great pressure from Ousmane Dembele sees him win possession off Nathan Ake before he knocks the ball to N’Golo Kante.

Kante slips a pass through to Antoine Griezmann whose first touch is poor. He then prods at the ball and sends it towards goal but Bart Verbruggen closes him down and makes the block.

Netherlands 0-0 France

63 mins: Chance!

That was the moment. France recycle the ball after a corner and swing it back into the box from the right wing. Aurelien Tchouameni leaps highest and wins the ball with whipping a strong header towards goal.

Bart Verbruggen watches it all the way and lets the ball fly over the top of the crossbar.

Netherlands 0-0 France

60 mins: An hour played in this one and still nothing to separate the two teams. In France’s last six matches without Kylian Mbappe in the starting XI they are yet to win.

They’ve played out four draws and two defeats.

Marcus Thuram attempts to get them into the lead and takes a snapshot from outside the box. It’s a decent effort but the accuracy isn’t there and the effort rolls wide.

Netherlands 0-0 France

57 mins: Chance for the Netherlands after they win a free kick just outside the box. It’s about 20 yards or so away and Memphis Depay fancies it.

He shoots but smokes the shot straight into the head of Marcus Thuram doing his defensive duties in the wall.

Netherlands 0-0 France

54 mins: N’Golo Kante seems confident. He’s played well tonight and looks back to his best so decides to take on a shot from long range.

It’s not great and continues to rise over the crossbar.

Netherlands 0-0 France

48 mins: The second half has started in a fairly mundane manner. France are trying to control possession as they did in the first half, Netherlands still happy to sit off them.

Second half! Netherlands 0-0 France

France get the ball rolling again in Leipzig. Kylian Mbappe is still on the bench for Les Bleus and doesn’t look likely to feautre any time soon.
