Manchester United v Liverpool LIVE: Result and final score after Diaz and Salah rip through shambolic hosts

Manchester United slumped to rivals Liverpool as Erik ten Hag lost a second Premier League game in a row

Luis Diaz scored twice and Mohamed Salah added a third as Liverpool ripped through Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Arne Slot kept up his perfect start to life in charge of Liverpool as his visiting side easily swept aside their hosts. By contrast, Erik ten Hag’s side showed many of the same shambolic signs of last season, with Casemiro at fault for the first two goals and hauled off at half-time.

It was another damaging day for the home side after a late defeat to Brighton last week, with Ten Hag booed as he made second half substitutions in a bid to spark a comeback. After Trent Alexander-Arnold had a goal chalked off for offside inside the first ten minutes, Diaz twice converted Salah deliveries as Liverpool pounced on two poor errors from the vastly experienced Casemiro.

Salah then popped up with a goal of his own, striking after Kobbie Mainoo had been knocked off the ball by Alexis Mac Allister. Liverpool are three wins from three heading into the international break and yet to concede a Premier League goal under their new boss; Manchester United, by contrast, again look to be plagued with problems.

Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool, 70 minutes

Maguire is involved instantly, heading Bruno Fernandes’ floaty free kick back across goal after it bounces at the far post. It’s pretty much impossible for even Maguire to generate any power with that sort of ball, though, and Alisson watches it into the gloves.

Alexis Mac Allister cannot believe he’s been adjudged to have fouled Alejandro Garnacho despite both standing on the Manchester United wideman’s foot and jabbing a hand in his throat.

It’s a free kick in a dangerous area, though Manchester United will have to wait to take it because their manager fancies a couple of changes. Harry Maguire for Matthijs de Ligt, and - to significant boos from the crowd - Amad Diallo for Garnacho.

A first change from Arne Slot, externally showing little but surely cock-a-hoop on the inside. Cody Gakpo is his first substitute, stepping in for Luis Diaz. The Colombian won’t get an Old Trafford hat-trick but he’s had a handy day.

Joshua Zirkzee draws another smart save from Alisson, though his headed effort was closer to the goalkeeper than he’d have liked.

At the other end, Matthis de Ligt absolutely scythes down Luis Diaz. The Dutch centre back is, once Liverpool’s attacking adventures fail to bring reward, booked.

Results stay the same even as the faces change. Well, all but two faces. This was a retirement performance from Casemiro. As bad as he was, though, it shouldn't be forgotten that Slot didn't get his six either. He worked around it - and has Liverpool playing to an idea within three games. Which is a lot more than can be said for Ten Hag. There's no getting away from that bigger issue there. United made Ten Hag look and feel a lame duck by essentially interviewing him for his own job and still persisting with him. It is going to be an issue that hangs over the whole season unless results are excellent. They're currently 3-0 down.

Oles from the visiting Liverpool fans as their side pop the ball about with aplomb, the rest of Old Trafford having fallen silent.

Now the home fans howl in frustration. Toby Collyer wins the ball in a good area and provides Marcus Rashford with possession in a nice area, but the winger just looks lacking in confidence and conviction. He goes nowhere and is eventually forced back.

Mohamed Salah has now scored on his last seven visits to Old Trafford. He very nearly has a second within a matter of moments, Lisandro Martinez giving the ball away and both relieved and, probably, surprised when Salah skies his shot.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-3 LIVERPOOL (Mohamed Salah, 56 minutes)

Another Manchester United midfielder is dispossessed and Liverpool strike again!

Strikingly similar. Kobbie Mainoo is pincered in midfield and biffed off the ball by Alexis Mac Allister. Dominik Szoboszlai puts Mohamed Salah in, and a crisp, clean, curling finish is out of reach of Andre Onana. It’s turning into a damaging afternoon for Manchester United.

Manchester United 0-2 Liverpool, 54 minutes

Liverpool haven’t quite got going in this half, perhaps not helped by the long delay.

That’s more like it, Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai combining with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who bruises a blocking Manchester United thigh with a fierce drive. The flag was up, anyway - Salah had been just off earlier in the movement.

Good save! Vollyer gets forward and wins a header above Ibrahima Konate, setting up Joshua Zirkzee to curl at Alisson’s goal. The Brazilian palms it away low to his left.
