McTominay scored both of the hosts goals in an entertaining 2-1 win as the hosts found their attacking flow.
After Bruno Fernandes had seen a spot-kick saved, the Scottish midfielder’s neatly-taken volley put the home side into a deserved lead 20 minutes in. Cole Palmer levelled just before half-time, though, as Chelsea rallied, causing regular problems for Ten Hag’s defence.
The Dutch manager responded with a switch at the interval, bringing on Sergio Reguilon and moving Luke Shaw to a central position to secure things at the back.
The move worked, affording McTominay the freedom to stride forward and powerfully direct home an inviting cross from Alejandro Garnacho home to put Manchester United back in front.
And though Armando Broja struck the woodwork with a header later on, Andre Onana was largely untroubled during the second half as the hosts moved ahead of Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side will go back in front with a win or draw at Everton on Thursday night; Chelsea, meanwhile remain tenth.

Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 57 minutes
This game is just battling for a bit of rhythm having been punctured by the half-time break. Reece James makes his first purposeful overlapping dart but has strayed offside before the pass is played.
It’s game over in the 7.30pm GMT kick offs, by the way:
Brighton 2-1 Brentford
Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth
Fulham 5-0 Nottingham Forest
Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool
Still no score at Villa Park.
Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 55 minutes
That’s much more aaesthetically pleasing from the wideman, though, cutting in and curling nicely for the top corner. A yard or so away after opening his body nicely to try and place it.
Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 54 minutes
Alejandro Garnacho improvises an overhead kick, but this isn’t quite Everton-esque, a frantic flail at a ball bouncing away from him that, inevitably, ends up in the stands.
Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 52 minutes
You’d still term Mykhailo Mudryk very much a work in progress, but his positive qualities are easy to see. A mazy, slightly manic motor up the left leaves Sergio Reguilon twisting and turning, allowing Mudryk to get a shot away, which is blocked behind. Chelsea can’t make anything of the corner.
Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 49 minutes
Over the bar! That’s a cracking chance for Nicolas Jackson, though his push on Diogo Dalot might have prompted VAR intervention. A cross-box header from Reece James ends up on his striker’s head, and it’s a surprise that Jackson fails to hit the target having buffeted Dalot out the way.
Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea, 48 minutes
A slightly scrappy start to the second half, with both sets of players struggling to re-find their passing range.
That’s more like it, Cole Palmer using the outside of his boot to thread in Raheem Sterling, who earns a corner.
Second half...
Changes for both sides at half time, neither necessarily a surprise: Reece James is on for Marc Cucurella at right back for Chelsea, a round peg for a round hole, while Manchester United opt for the opposite approach - Luke Shaw shifts in to centre half, where he played at the weekend, with Sergio Reguilon replacing Victor Lindelof.
HT: Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea
Elsewhere, meanwhile, Fulham are now 5-0 up against Nottingham Forest - how much pressure will Steve Cooper now be under?
Just a single goal between the two sides in each of the three other games that kicked off 45 minutes before our featured fixture. About ten minutes of regulation time left, with the later kick off between Aston Villa and Manchester City just about to get their game back underway after halftime.
Brighton 2-1 Brentford
Crystal Palace 0-1 Bournemouth
Fulham 5-0 Nottingham Forest
Sheffield United 0-1 Liverpool
Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
HT: Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea
One apiece at the interval after an entertaining first half at Old Trafford. Chances at both ends despite a game which Manchester United have, largely, had the better of, with both teams looking dangerous in possession and vulnerable without the ball.
Bruno Fernandes was granted an opportunity to put his side in front when Antony was fouled by Enzo Fernandez, but Robert Sanchez kept the Manchester United captain’s penalty out. The goalkeeper was powerless to stop Scott McTominay’s firm finish ten minutes later, though, and it looked at that point like the hosts might build on a bright start to take command of the fixture.
But Chelsea have always threatened, and Cole Palmer’s neat finish just before the interval leaves things all square.
