Scott McTominay fired an impressive Manchester United to victory over Chelsea as Erik ten Hag’s side bounced back into the Premier League’s top six.

McTominay scored both of the hosts goals in an entertaining 2-1 win as the hosts found their attacking flow.

After Bruno Fernandes had seen a spot-kick saved, the Scottish midfielder’s neatly-taken volley put the home side into a deserved lead 20 minutes in. Cole Palmer levelled just before half-time, though, as Chelsea rallied, causing regular problems for Ten Hag’s defence.

The Dutch manager responded with a switch at the interval, bringing on Sergio Reguilon and moving Luke Shaw to a central position to secure things at the back.

The move worked, affording McTominay the freedom to stride forward and powerfully direct home an inviting cross from Alejandro Garnacho home to put Manchester United back in front.

And though Armando Broja struck the woodwork with a header later on, Andre Onana was largely untroubled during the second half as the hosts moved ahead of Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side will go back in front with a win or draw at Everton on Thursday night; Chelsea, meanwhile remain tenth.

Chelsea are readying a change. Ian Maatsen had been stripped off and ready before McTominay’s goal, but the versatile Dutchman has sat down again. It’ll be Armando Broja instead - he goes up alongside Nicolas Jackson with Mykhailo Mudryk off.

Chelsea are all over the place! Reece James salvages a sorry situation he had put his side in, an under-hit backpass affording Alejandro Garnacho an opportunity. Garnacho waits too long as he asssesses how best to beat Robert Sanchez and James gets back to block.

A wretched effort with a hat-trick there for the taking! Scott McTominay wails in frustration and fury, disbelieving at his own ineptitude. Robert Sanchez’s woeful distribution had granted Manchester United’s forward-most quartet the chance to bear down on goal, and McTominay had opened up his body to try and fashion a left-footed shot. But his studs appear to stick in the floor, and it’s a horrible attempt in the end.

GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 Chelsea (Scott McTominay, 70 minutes)

He just cannot stop scoring!

Scott McTominay again! He’s such an impressive presence in the box when he drives forward like that, the Scottish midfielder arriving late on to Alejandro Garnacho’s inviting ball. McTominay gobbles up the opportunity - but has he fouled a Chelsea defender before heading home? VAR pauses the restart to check...but it’ll count! Levi Colwill sprawled to floor but the contact was minimal - Manchester United go back in front.

A series of crossing opportunities for the home side, but Manchester United just can’t quite find the right delivery. Antony spins into space and is caught in two minds, neither shooting nor crossing.

A bit of a tired ball from Antony, who has time and enough space to find a teammate. Moises Caicedo intercepts.

How long until either manager makes another change? Chelsea don’t have too many options on the bench, but both sides look in need of fresh legs.

Manchester United are starting to up the tempo. A simple drag-back creates room for Bruno Fernandes with Moises Caicedo not touch tight, and the Portuguse midfielder’s shot is deflected away for a corner.

Fernandes’s hoist is met by Scott McTominay, but a gentle outswinger requires the Scotland international to generate all of the power. Robert Sanchez saves in relative comfort.

Luke Shaw thrashes a shot on goal, striking his half-volley crisply. It strikes Levi Colwill’s arm on the way through to a second Chelsea blocker, but such was the speed that the defender hadn’t a hope of dodging it, and his hand was down by his side anyway. VAR David Coote clears it after a brief review of the footage in the background.

Just wide! A huge deflection on Antony’s shot from the edge of the area sends it spinning towards the corner, forcing Robert Sanchez to scramble across. The goalkeeper can’t get there and is rather relieved it bounces a foot or so outside his post.

Lively feet from Alejandro Garnacho create space for Sergio Reguilon, but the Spaniard can’t beat the first man with his cross. Garnacho then has a go himself, getting to the byline but over-hitting his cross with limited numbers in the box.

Marcus Rashford, beanie and coat on, is starting to get warm.
