Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester City avoided becoming the latest top-flight side to stumble at the hands of League Two Newport County at Rodney Pardade thanks to a late flurry of goal.

The 4-1 scoreline is perhaps a tad harsh on the home side who defended very well, but second half goals from Leroy Sane, and Riyad Mahrez either side of Phil Foden's double was the difference.

Padraig made it 2-1 with just minutes of normal time remaining as Newport threatened to mount a late comeback, but Foden added his second before Mahrez completed the job in added time.

City will learn their opponents in the quarter-final draw on Monday night. Re-live the action below:

Newport 0-1 Manchester City

A bit of encouragement for Newport, who threaten for the first time in a while. Otamendi is injured in the process of stopping a dangerous move and is down receiving some treatment.

Newport 0-1 Manchester City

72 minutes

Newport win a free kick in a central position about 30 yards out. Willmott curls it in and Stones heads away, but it's knocked straight back into the box and O'Brien rises highest from a few yards out. Ederson is positioned well to catch it, though.

GOAL! Newport 0-2 Manchester City (Foden)

75 minutes

That's probably game over. Foden collects the ball on the halfway line and drives forward. He beats Butler and hits a shot towards the near post, which Day should save. Instead, it finds its way past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Newport 0-2 Manchester City

Sane is picked out at the back post and looks certain to add a third goal. But he decides to lay the ball back across goal. There's no one there to receive his pass, though, and Newport clear.

Newport 0-2 Manchester City

85 minutes

Sane could have had a few goals today. He comes close again, latching onto a ball over the top and attempting to dink his finish over Day. Again, it hits the goalkeeper in the face, but this time it doesn't go in.

GOAL! Newport 1-2 Manchester City (Amond)

Newport are back in it! A long ball is played towards Amond, who latches onto it and lifts his finish over Ederson. They've got a few minutes to find an equaliser.
