From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Manchester City avoided becoming the latest top-flight side to stumble at the hands of League Two Newport County at Rodney Pardade thanks to a late flurry of goal.

The 4-1 scoreline is perhaps a tad harsh on the home side who defended very well, but second half goals from Leroy Sane, and Riyad Mahrez either side of Phil Foden's double was the difference.

Padraig made it 2-1 with just minutes of normal time remaining as Newport threatened to mount a late comeback, but Foden added his second before Mahrez completed the job in added time.

City will learn their opponents in the quarter-final draw on Monday night. Re-live the action below:

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

33 minutes

City's players are growing increasingly frustrated. They're not having it all their own way and have been unable to play with their usual fluidity. Newport deserve a lot of credit for the way they've approached this so far.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

34 minutes

Silva comes forward with the ball and feeds Mahrez, who sees another shot saved by Day. Sane and Silva then play a neat one-two, and the former strikes the bar from close range. They're getting closer.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

35 minutes

Newport have gone a bit quiet in an attacking sense, but Amond tries to change that, firing off a snapshot on his left foot. It's wide of the near post but it gives some encouragement to the home fans.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

40 minutes

Otamendi is nearly caught out trying to play the ball out from defence. He can only pick out Willmott, but his touch lets him down and the chance is gone. Newport will be eager to hear the half time whistle now.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

42 minutes

Foden and Silva link up nicely and the latter finds himself a few yards out from goal. He can't quite position himself to shoot, though, and looks instead to find Sane. There's not enough on his pass and Newport come away with the ball.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

43 minutes

Newport's defenders are throwing their bodies in the way of everything. O'Brien blocks a Sane shot and the replay shows that he did so with his arm. A bit of good fortune for the hosts.

Newport 0-0 Manchester City

45 minutes

Zinchenko drills a corner to the near post and Foden heads wide. Newport are very nearly at half time with the game still goalless.

Half time: And there is the half time whistle! Newport's players leave the pitch to cheers and applause having matched the Premier League champions for most of the game. They might have led, too, had Bakinson converted his chance. It's still all to play for at Rodney Parade after the break.

Callum Rice-Coates16 February 2019 18:20

It's been some defensive effort from the League Two side so far.

Callum Rice-Coates16 February 2019 18:24

City get us back underway. Can they break Newport's resistance in the second half?
