A first-half header from Marcus Rashford, his 100th goal for Manchester United in all competitions, was enough to earn his side a 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League.
After making a slow start to the match, United burst into life in the 38th minute when Rashford powered a bullet header into the net on the end of Christian Eriksen’s sublime cross to give the home side the lead.
Veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo, making just his third league start of the season, wasted a golden chance to double United’s lead early in the second half, firing wide from a good position, before West Ham upped the ante.
The visitors piled on the pressure as the match wore on, with David de Gea twice called into action to deny West Ham substitute Michail Antonio, producing superb stops on both occasions. Another sensational save from De Gea to deny Declan Rice right at the death preserved United’s victory which takes them above Chelsea into fifth in the standings, one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle.

HALF-TIME! Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
HALF-TIME! A decent first half from West Ham but they were undone by a delicious Christian Eriksen cross that was thunderously headed home by Marcus Rashford for his 100th Man Utd goal. Erik ten Hag will be happy enough with what he’s seen.

Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
45 mins: West Ham have responded well to falling a goal behind, keeping possession in the United half but can’t carve out a clear opportunity.
A brilliant switch to Shaw in space on the left then sets up a United attack but Bruno Fernandes’ whipped cross is just a hair too high for a leaping Ronaldo and Fabianski can claim.
Just one minute of added time.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
42 mins: There’s been plenty of criticism of Marcus Rashford over the past 12 months but in recent weeks, he appears to be recapturing some of his best form. Just in time for the World Cup potentially? That really was a superb header.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
39 mins: West Ham straight on the attack after going a goal down and they win a corner. Well defended by United though.
GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 West Ham - Marcus Rashford 37'
GOAL! And United have the breakthrough.
Neat interplay on the right and Eriksen whips in a gorgeous ball that Rashford attacks at the back post. He outjumps Kehrer and powers a header past Fabianski. Ronaldo-esque dare we say...
That’s his 100th goal for Manchester United in all competitions. Not a bad way to bring that milestone up
Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
36 mins: A clumsy tackle from Scamacca on Rashford earns the West Ham striker a yellow card and Man Utd a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left wing. But a poor ball in from Shaw is comfortably cleared.
Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
35 mins: Nice ball from Eriksen to Rashford on the left and he finds Shaw on the overlap. Rice blocks the cross for a corner.
The ball is then floated to Elanga at the back post but he lashes at the ball and skews it across the face of goal.
