A first-half header from Marcus Rashford, his 100th goal for Manchester United in all competitions, was enough to earn his side a 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League.
After making a slow start to the match, United burst into life in the 38th minute when Rashford powered a bullet header into the net on the end of Christian Eriksen’s sublime cross to give the home side the lead.
Veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo, making just his third league start of the season, wasted a golden chance to double United’s lead early in the second half, firing wide from a good position, before West Ham upped the ante.
The visitors piled on the pressure as the match wore on, with David de Gea twice called into action to deny West Ham substitute Michail Antonio, producing superb stops on both occasions. Another sensational save from De Gea to deny Declan Rice right at the death preserved United’s victory which takes them above Chelsea into fifth in the standings, one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle.

Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
65 mins: Another United corner as Benrahma heads behind but again, the Hammers do just enough to clear.
And West Ham counter through Rice who puts a good ball into the box, where Dalot jumps in front of Antonio and heads behind.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
63 mins: Another effort from Ronaldo, as the ball is worked to him on the edge of the area but it’s half-blocked and spirals over the bar for a corner.
West Ham scramble that corner clear but they’ve had their back to the wall for the past few minutes.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
61 mins: CHANCE! A couple of chances in quick succession for Ronaldo but he spurns both.
Firstly, Shaw whips in a cross from the left and Ronaldo leaps high but can only head wide. The cross may have been just a shade too high for him to get the desired connection.
The second chance is better though. Rashford slips in the Portuguese to the left of the goal and he he has a sight of goal but lashes the ball over the bar - not much control there.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
60 mins: Nice ball by Kehrer into Bowen, who tries to get past Maguire and into the box, but the England defender stays strong. Half-hearted appeals for a penalty but Maguire is just on the right side of the law.
Defensive substitution from Ten Hag as Anthony Elanga is removed, with Scott McTominay coming on. United need to get control of the midfield back, so it makes sense. And Elanga has been very quiet.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
59 mins: More great defending from Dalot as he gets a head to Bowen’s cross into an inviting area. He’s defended really well today.
At the other end, Casemiro tries to curl a cross in for Ronaldo but Zouma is equal to it and can clear.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
56 mins: Good header clear from Dalot to defend a dangerous-looking Kehrer cross.
West Ham make a change as Michail Antonio comes on for Gianluca Scamacca. Scamacca was probably on his final warning before a second booking, so it was a necessary sacrifice from David Moyes.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
54 mins: Man Utd have been giving the ball away in this second half so far and the lead is only one goal. West Ham having a lot of possession but yet to create anything clear cut.
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
51 mins: CLOSE! Rashford cuts in from the right, turns inside the slightly beleaguered Kehrer and whips a shot towards the far post but it curls just wide. He’s playing with much more confidence now
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
50 mins: Scamacca has to be a bit careful! The ball is played to him in the box, his shot is blocked and balloons into the air. He goes for it with a raised foot as Martinez goes with his head and the Argentine goes down - the fans scream for a booking, which would see Scamacca sent off after his first-half booking.
The referee keeps his cards in his pocket though
Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
48 mins: Good strength by Maguire to hold off Scamacca and shield the ball out for a goal-kick. West Ham have started this second half on the front foot - they’ve been a much better second-half team than first-half team this season as well.
