"Ten Hag brings out the best in me" - new Man Utd winger Antony

Manchester United ended Arsenal’s winning start to the Premier League season in a thrilling clash that saw Antony score on his debut and Marcus Rashford hit a quick-fire double after Bukayo Saka had equalised in the second half.

After a bright start by both teams, Arsenal thought they had struck first as Gabriel Martinelli finished a devastating counter-attack but the goal was ruled out by VAR for an earlier foul on Christian Eriksen.

From there Arsenal took control but the Gunners were torn apart by United on the break, as Rashford set up Antony to steer a first-time finish past Aaron Ramsdale for a debut goal following his €100m move from Ajax.

Arsenal responded after the break with chances through Martin Odegaard and Saka, before the England international fired a deserved equaliser on the hour-mark. It seemed as if Arsenal had the momentum, but they were hit with a counter-punch as Rashford raced away to restore their lead.

It was the latest swing in a thrilling match and with Arsenal pushing forward with more numbers, Rashford scored his second to seal United’s fourth straight win and end Arsenal’s unbeaten start.

Man Utd boss Ten Hag on Antony

Erik ten Hag has spoken in depth about Antony following his £85 million arrival and debut goal this afternoon.

He said: “We can make speed and creativity together, he [Antony] will be a threat in the Premier League. We were missing a player on the right wing, [Jadon] Sancho and [Marcus] Rashford can play there but they prefer the left so now we have the missing link who can play well on the right. He did well but I think he can do better. He had a great goal but all the goals were team goals.

“It’s a process - you have to lift the standards every day. That is my demand and the players in our team have that demand, we have many players in the team who have won trophies and they have to bring that standard. Get the best out of them every day.

“We have to think about Europa League - today we will have a short celebration and tomorrow focus will be on the next game.”

More from Arteta

Arteta has also spoken about Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed goal in the first half. It would have given Arsenal the lead, but a foul on Christian Eriksen in the build-up saw the goal ruled out.

Speaking about the incident, Arteta said: “Lack of consistency. One is soft and last week they made a foul on Aaron but it is soft, it is not a foul.

“There is a foul on Bukayo, it is soft but not a penalty. Today it is a foul. The threshold in the first actions, you could see there is no yellow card because they want to keep a threshold in a big game. Really difficult to understand.”

Arteta reacts to Arsenal defeat

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given his reaction to their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United this afternoon.

He told Sky Sports: “I am really disappointed to lose the game especially with the way it went over the 95 minutes. We had some big periods where we were totally dominant and in total control. We created chance after chance but did not close the game. In any moment, when they have open spaces, they are ging to hurt you.

“They had three big chances and scored three goals, we have numerous chances and we didn’t score enough. We had a period in the first 18 minutes when we struggle and did not control the game but after that it was all us.

“We lose the ball in a really difficult place and play a ball in an area we don’t have to and one pass and they are through.

“We should come here and win because of the way we play. Because of the performance and the way we dominated the game.”

Manchester United’s win over Arsenal today means they are now on their best run in the Premier League for 16 months.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the club on a run of five successive league wins in March and April 2021.

Since then, the best they have managed is three - with today their fourth consecutive victory following wins over Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester.

More from Ten Hag on United win

The United boss added: “You can see that Arsenal are more together, more routines - but our team spirit brings us the win.

“We can still do things better, with pressing, we had a good plan but the incoming from Zinchenko for instance, that gives them overnumbering in midfeld. We can be more composed on the ball, don’t give it away away

“When we got beat in the press we fought back and recovered, especially in transitions we were good.”

Specifically discussing Antony and Marcus Rashford, he said: “They both played great, a continual threat, I know our offensive is really strong - they are creative and have speed.

“This is the first time they have played together and this performance is great to see.”
