In the red and white heat of the first top-flight Pennines derby to be played at a packed Elland Road in 19 years, victory was always likeliest for whichever one of these historic rivals kept their cool. The occasion demanded that Manchester United play on the edge and they almost came careering off it, at one point surrendering a two-goal lead in the space of 59 seconds. It briefly seemed this would be another collapse to add to Ralf Rangnick’s growing collection.
Instead, it was the first time that they have lost a lead and regained it under his management and an important lesson that no setback is insurmountable. Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes’ pair of first-half goals should have made this much-welcome win over Leeds United more comfortable than it was, but two strikes by substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga made it comfortable all the same.
Leeds’ thrilling fightback - led by Rodrigo and Raphinha - was in vain. It seemed that Elland Road’s patrons could leave celebrating one of the most memorable wins in their recent history during the frenetic moments after that quickfire double. Anything seemed possible for a team driven by a loud and ferocious crowd. But having already taken the sting out of the occasion once, United knew they could do so again and did so again with a quiet, impressive air of composure. 27 mins: Save! Incredible stop from Illan Meslier. Paul Pogba receives the ball on the left wing and shimmies around Adam Forshaw. He takes the ball into the penalty area and squares a pass into the six yard box. Cristiano Ronaldo squeezes in front of a defender gets to the ball and taps it towards goal but Meslier jumps in front of the shot and keeps it out from close range! What a save from the Leeds United goalkeeper.

24 mins: Illan Meslier makes a mistake by giving the ball away to Jadon Sancho. United react quickly and fly up the pitch. Sancho plays the ball across to Bruno Fernandes who slides a through ball into the area for Scott McTominay. He tries to bring it under control but gets the ball stuck under his own feet and Meslier is out quickly to smother the ball.

21 mins: Stuart Dallas and Jack Harrison link up on the left wing and win a throw in by sending the ball out off Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The throw comes to Adam Forshaw and it’s too easy for him to run into space in the box. He blasts a shot at goal but David De Gea manages to palm it away to safety!

18 mins: Decent game this. Leeds are committing men forward when thye have possession and are passing the ball around nicely. Man Utd haven’t yet clicked into gear with their own attacking play.
McTominay intercepts the ball and slides it into the box for Jadon Sancho. He lifts the ball over to the back post where Cristiano Ronaldo is open but the pass it too heavy and sails over the striker’s head. Ronaldo applauds the idea though.

15 mins: Robin Koch has had his head bandaged up and he’s changed his shirt due to the blood. Leeds curl the free kick into the Manchester United box but it hits Rodrigo and bounces behind for a goal kick.

12 mins: Robin Koch is closed down by Scott McTominay in the middle of the pitch. McTominay barges into the Leeds player and there’s a clash of heads. Koch stays down and needs a bit of treatment, there’s a cut on his forehead that needs to be dealt with before the game continues.
It was a clumsy tackle from McTominay. The ball had already gone.

9 mins: Bruno Fernandes takes a knock after Luke Ayling flies into a sliding challenge and wins the ball. The Manchester United midfielder hobbles away but is okay to continue.
Chance! Nice work from Victor Lindelof to slot a pass up to Paul Pogba. He spins away from Adam Forshaw and carries the ball into the box before sending a low effort straight at Illan Meslier. The goalkeeper fumbles the slippery ball but there are no red shirts around to latch onto the rebound.

6 mins: Chance! Aaron Wan-Bissaka knocks the ball away from Mateusz Klich but gets clipped by the follow through and goes down. The referee plays on and the ball comes back to Klich who takes it around the sprawled Man Utd right-back and drives towards the box. He chips the ball to the vacant space on the right side of the penalty area where Jack Harrison arrives to meet the ball on the half-volley but he punts his shot over the crossbar!

3 mins: There’s some early excitement for the Leeds fans as Rodrigo slots a through ball over to Dan James on the right wing. He has open space in behind Luke Shaw to run into but just started to move too soon and gets flagged offside.
There’s a really good atmosphere around the ground.
