Rangnick hails rejuvenated Ronaldo after win over Brighton

In the red and white heat of the first top-flight Pennines derby to be played at a packed Elland Road in 19 years, victory was always likeliest for whichever one of these historic rivals kept their cool. The occasion demanded that Manchester United play on the edge and they almost came careering off it, at one point surrendering a two-goal lead in the space of 59 seconds. It briefly seemed this would be another collapse to add to Ralf Rangnick’s growing collection.

Instead, it was the first time that they have lost a lead and regained it under his management and an important lesson that no setback is insurmountable. Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes’ pair of first-half goals should have made this much-welcome win over Leeds United more comfortable than it was, but two strikes by substitutes Fred and Anthony Elanga made it comfortable all the same.

Leeds’ thrilling fightback - led by Rodrigo and Raphinha - was in vain. It seemed that Elland Road’s patrons could leave celebrating one of the most memorable wins in their recent history during the frenetic moments after that quickfire double. Anything seemed possible for a team driven by a loud and ferocious crowd. But having already taken the sting out of the occasion once, United knew they could do so again and did so again with a quiet, impressive air of composure. Follow all the reaction from Leeds 2-4 Man United:

Leeds 2 - 2 Man Utd

57 mins: There was a VAR check for a possible foul on Fernandes by Forshaw in the build-up to Leeds’ second goal but nothing comes of it and this game is very much alive now.

Elland Road is rocking again, so too are Manchester United. There’s plenty of time for them to get back in front but all the momentum is with Leeds.

GOAL! Leeds 2 - 2 Man Utd (Raphinha, 54’)⚽️

54 mins: Equaliser! What a great goal from Leeds. Raphinha plays it across from the right and Wan-Bissaka intercepts by poking the ball to Fernandes. He’s caught in possession by Forshaw who gives the ball to James. James takes it into the left side of the box, passes it across the six-yard area to pick out Raphinha at the back post and he taps it home!

GOAL! Leeds 1 - 2 Man Utd (Rodrigo, 53’)⚽️

53 mins: Oh hello! Leeds counterattack and play the ball down the left wing to Rodrigo. He crosses the ball and whips it towards the back post. David De Gea flaps at it but fails to tap it behind. The ball sails over his head, hits the inside of the far post and finishes in the back of the net. Lucky for Leeds!

Leeds 0 - 2 Man Utd

51 mins: A long ball comes up to Cristiano Ronaldo who makes a run in behind the Leeds defence. They all think he’s offside but no flag comes from the assistant referee. Ronaldo takes the ball into the right side of the box and tries to sneak it in by the near post but Illan Meslier makes a good save. Now the offside flag is raised.

Leeds 0 - 2 Man Utd

48 mins: Close. Leeds have started the second half well. Dan James makes a decent run into the right side of the box and the ball is threaded into him. He chips it into the middle of the area and Joe Gelhardt sticks out a leg to try and tap the aerial bal at goal but it just evades him and bounces away.

Leeds 0 - 2 Man Utd

Kick off: Joe Gelhardt and Raphinha have been brought on by Marcelo Bielsa at the break. The home side restart the match and Gelhardt is into the action immediately. He drives towards the box and squares a pass over to Mateusz Klich. Klich shoots from just outsdie the box but Luke Shaw is there to deflect it behind for a corner.

Leeds 0 - 2 Man Utd

There’s a torrential downpour over Elland Road and the conditions are very difficult for both teams. It looks as though Raphinha is coming on at half-time for Leeds. Can he make the difference for the home side?
