Sporting Lisbon 0-5 Manchester City: Follow live reaction after City put one foot in the quarter-finals with a big first-leg win
Follow live reaction from the Champions League after Manchester City cruised to an away victory at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
City, who are again favourites to win the Champions League title, made a perfect start in Portugal as Riyad Mahrez steered the Premier League side ahead after eight minutes.
The goal was given after a lengthy VAR check, with the opener being initially disallowed due to an offside in the build-up, but it was finally awarded to give Mahrez a ninth goal in as many games.
City doubled their lead on 17 minutes as Bernardo Silva guided a stunning half-volley off the underside of the crossbar from a corner to put the visitors in full control of the tie.
Phil Foden put City three up on 32 minutes as the visitors continued to dominate, with Bernardo adding City’s fourth shortly before half-time.
Bernardo had a header disallowed for offside after the break as he was denied a hat-trick, but Raheem Sterling added their fifth with a sublime shot into the top corner.

Now this could be a long evening for Sporting.
What a goal from Bernardo Silva. It came from a City corner with De Bruyne sending the ball into the box.
It bounced and found it’s way to Silva who took a touch and smashed it home.
I have no words, the start of this match hasn’t seen the best football from City but yet they are 2-0 up. It’s easy to see why they are favourites this season.
17’ - Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Man City
City may have the opening goal but Sporting are continuing their pressure. So much so De Bruyne put in a cross that saw a rare bad ball from the Belgian, which went out for a goal kick.
The game has found a good rhythm now with the early nerves gone.
But it is City who are pushing in attack, Sporting need to get more chances in to stop City getting a stranglehold of this match.
13’ - Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Man City
Well the deadlock didn’t last long did it?
It’s worth noting Sporting keeper Adan saved a good shot from Foden but Mahrez pounced and the keeper couldn’t get back.
The opener seems to have shaken Sporting with Stones almost doubling their lead. The hosts’ defence spiralled to allow a free shot but it went just wide.
Sporting then tried to steady the ship by retaining possession. Mahrez had to clear a dangerous ball in the box and while they haven’t found an equaliser yet, they’ve woken the crowd back up.
GOAL! - Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Man City (Mahrez, 9’)
Mahrez had put City ahead.
Phil Foden thought he had a hand in Mahrez’ opener but he was ruled offside by the referee. It was a long wait to see the result of the check with City looking impatient.
As the time dragged on the better it was looking for City. The clock ticked on and eventually it was ruled a goal!
Wow, a dramatic start.
5’ - Sporting Lisbon 0-0 Man City
The Sporting fans continued to make their presence known in the opening stages as deafening boos came in whenever City had the ball. It was even worse when ex-Benfica players, for example captain Ruben Dias, had possession.
The ball pin balled around each team with no real chances being created. However, Sporting put together the most promising passage of play with a cross in but Ederson collected the threat.
City responded with a corner. De Bruyne took the kick but Sporting dealt well and headed away.

City will take on Sporting in 20 minutes in the first leg of the last 16 but what do we know about the Portuguese side?
They are a team which has recently won the title, knocked out Borussia Dortmund from Europe and sold or loaned-to-sell Nuno Mendes, Matheus Pereira, Wendel and Bruno Fernandes across the last three seasons, they’re rarely out of the headlines and have the capacity for an upset.

Sporting Lisbon vs Man City
Sporting are gearing up to host Premier League holders and last year’s Champions League finalist Manchester City.
It’s set to be a spectacular match with most leaning towards a City victory. Sporting’s keeper Adan will no doubt have many shots fired at him over 90 minutes and he’s been putting the work pre-kick-off to be ready.
And if Raheem Sterling is on firing form as he was against Norwich then Adan is most certainly in for a busy night...
