Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Chong tries his luck from long range but his effort is scuffed. Luton recover the ball, though, and Gilles's tempting cross nearly causes Areola trouble in the West Ham trouble. The Frenchman flaps at the ball, which falls loose, but West Ham can clear.

Benrahma hangs another cross up towards the back post but Giles just gets his head in before the onrushing Bowen could get a strike on goal. Another cross follows from the right, but Benrahma snatches at it and sends his effort low and wide of the left post.
