Manchester City ended their four match run without a win as they edged past Luton Town 2-1 at Kenilworth Road in a contest that threatened to end in another negative result for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Without Erling Haaland in the squad, the visitors struggled to capitalise on their possession the first half and, aided by some fine saves from Thomas Kaminski, Lutin kept them at bay. Elijah Adebayo leapt above everyone else to nod home the opener just before the half-time break and Luton took the lead.

In the second half, Man City picked up where they left off and pushes the Hatters deep. Bernardo Silva curled in a superb left-footed strike just after the hour mark to equalise before Jack Grealish slotted home to decisive goal to secure the points for the champions.

Relive the action from Kenilworth Road below:

Luton 0-0 Man City

5 mins: Jack Grealish receives the ball on the left side and brings into inside before laying a pass off to Phil Foden on the edge of the box.

Grealish is taken out off the ball but nothing comes from it as Foden slides a pass across to Josko Gvardiol on the overlap. He slips a pass into the six yard box but it’s cleared away.

2 mins: Save! A Man City clearance comes up to Julian Alvarez who holds it up perfectly before releasing Phil Foden into space.

Foden flies down the inside left channel, takes the ball into the box then pings a left-footed strike at goal drawing a fine save out of Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Kick off! Luton 0-0 Man City

Manchester City get the ball rolling and work it out to Phil Foden on the right side of the pitch. He slips a pass into the box looking to play in Julian Alvarez, who is playing as the centre forward, but the ball is overhit and the Argentine can’t get there.

Rob Edwards spoke about taking on Man City saying: “I’m excited we’re playing them, I think the whole football club should be as well,” he said.

“Look what they’ve done in recent years - they’re a winning machine. We’re expecting the best and that’s what we’re preparing for. Their recent run of not winning doesn’t make a difference to us.”

Manchester City have won 13 of their past 14 top-flight matches versus newly-promoted opposition, only dropping points in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in February.

City’s most recent league loss to newly-promoted opposition came at home to Leeds in April 2021, while their last such defeat on the road came at Norwich in September 2019.

Pep Guardiola explains why Erling Haaland is not in the squad

“A bone stress reaction in his foot and after the last game he felt it. He cannot play.” said the Man City boss, “I don’t know [the length of the injury]. Week by week, day by day, we will see what happens.

“We play with 11 that’s for sure. Erling has been so important since he’s arrived that’s for sure. But during the season we see this sort of thing. Injuries, suspensions, problems, we have to adapt.

“Julian Alvarez will be playing [as our centre forward].”
