Mohamed Salah had an early chance to score after quick thinking from Trent Alexander-Arnold but was denied by Lukasz Fabianski. The Liverpool opener came as Alexander-Arnold fired a ball across the face and Mane was alive in the box to beat Fabianski to the ball and convert from close range.
West Ham, who were without England international Declan Rice, had their chances and could have found themselves level if not far some excellent defending from Alexander-Arnold to chase back and clear Pablo Fornals’ chip from underneath his own crossbar. Liverpool improved after half-time but couldn’t add a second goal that would have sealed three points, as West Ham came back into it. Manuel Lanzini and Michael Antonio had further opportunities for West Ham but Liverpool held on to extend their winning run.
It puts the pressure back on Manchester City ahead of tomorrow’s Manchester derby at the Etihad, as Liverpool turn their attention to the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Inter Milan. Follow reaction to Liverpool vs West Ham below, following the conclusion of this afternoon’s 3pm fixtures:
Liverpool 1-0 West Ham
30 mins: Wow, spectacular from Luis Diaz. He picks up the ball inside his own half before gliding clear of West Ham challenges and bursting towards the box. He had a pass to Salah but was brought down on the edge as he looked to work the space. You can tell that Anfield loves him already.
From the free-kick, Alexander-Arnold looks to catch Fabianski out at his post, but pulls the shot wide.
Liverpool 1-0 West Ham
28 mins: I was just about to write that West Ham would have been pleased with how they were slowing Liverpool down. Salah and Mane had been seeing a lot of the ball but they were having to drop deep to do so and West Ham were able to get plenty of men back. But danger is never far away, and Mane was alive to the situation.
GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 West Ham (MANE 27’)
It’s very close - but Mane looks to have given Liverpool the lead! Alexander-Arnold received Keita’s pass on the edge of the box before dragging a shot across goal. Mane was alive and beat Dawson to the ball to tuck home beyond Fabianski. It was close, but it’s given as onside following a VAR review.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
22 mins: West Ham then spring forward and Antonio is able to cut inside Konate, who is slow to turn, before firing at Alisson. The goalkeeper spills the shot out for a corner which this time is more threatening and forces Alisson to punch. Alexander-Arnold then blocks Bowen’s follow up.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
19 mins: Liverpool fire another effort at goal, but Mane’s strike is sliced wide after good work from Fabinho to win the ball back high up the pitch. Diaz and Robertson then link up before the left-back fires a low ball across the face. It’s bundled behind by West Ham but they are able to clear the corner.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
17 mins: West Ham have settled after Liverpool’s strong start. Soucek rolls a shot towards Alisson, which is comfortably saved.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
14 mins: Save! Antonio finds room in between Konate and Van Dijk to spin in behind and he forces a save from Alisson at his near post. Alisson palmed the ball over his bar but West Ham can’t beat Robertson at the front post.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
11 mins: Fabinho makes an excellent challenge on Bowen in midfield before Salah tries to slide Mane in behind. Zouma tracks back and intercepts.
Salah then plays in a teasing ball that Dawson clears, with Diaz lurking. Liverpool stay alive as Robertson fires it across. Diaz brings it under control but his shot is blocked from close range by Dawson again, before Salah drags a shot wide.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
8 mins: Liverpool concede a corner after Van Dijk clears Cresswell's delivery. Robertson then deals with the corner at the front post. It’s usually a danger area for West Ham and it was important to their 3-2 win over Liverpool back in November.
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham
5 mins: Liverpool have made a flying start here. From a wide free-kick, Van Dijk flicks Alexander-Arnold’s cross wide of goal. Then, Liverpool spot the run of Salah through the middle and it takes some good recovering defending from Dawson to make the challenge.
