Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a spectacular goal as the Reds bounced back from the loss of three players to suspected positive COVID-19 tests to beat Newcastle United 3-1 in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Thursday.
Liverpool move onto 40 points from 17 games, one behind leaders Manchester City who beat Leeds United 7-0 on Tuesday.
With Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones all ruled out for the hosts, Jonjo Shelvey struck the opener for Newcastle against the run of play in the seventh minute, with a swerving, dipping drive past unsighted goalkeeper Allison Becker.
The lead lasted 14 minutes before Diogo Jota fired home the rebound after Martin Dubravka saved his initial header to level, with Newcastle’s players complaining the ball should have been put out of play as Isaac Hayden was down injured in his own box.
Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead four minutes later and Alexander-Arnold got the third with an 87th-minute rocket to wrap up a win that leaves Newcastle second-bottom on 10 points.

Jonjo Shelvey takes it and whips a fine shot towards the top corner. Alisson comes flying across and watches it go wide of the near post.

66 mins: Henderson pumps a long ball over to Salah on the right wing. He does well to bring the ball iunder control and hold off Ritchie long enough to slide a pass to Oxlade-Chamberlain. Oxlade-Chamberlain drives into the box and fires a shot towards goal but belts it high over the crossbar.

63 mins: Last ditch stuff from Alexander-Arnold. The ball comes into the box from the right side and Alexander-Arnold gets there just in time. He pokes the ball away and brings down Fraser in the process. The referee says no penalty and VAR doesn’t overturn the decision even though he looked at it for a while.

Robertson slides a through ball into the box for Mane who collects the ball and shoots but the offside flag goes up against him.

Alexander-Arnold floats the free kick over to the back post where Mane pops up to head the ball into the six-yard box. Jota is left with a tap-in but Dubravka leaps forward and clings on to the ball before it reaches the Liverpool goalscorer.

Henderson, Thiago and Alexander-Arnold pass the ball between themselves trying to draw the Magpies out of shape but they hold firm. Henderson flicks a cross over to Salah who brings it inside and backheels a pass to Alexander-Arnold. The pass comes up short though and Fraser gets there first. He holds it up well and wins a free kick as the Liverpool right-back attempts to recover the ball.
