Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a spectacular goal as the Reds bounced back from the loss of three players to suspected positive COVID-19 tests to beat Newcastle United 3-1 in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Thursday.
Liverpool move onto 40 points from 17 games, one behind leaders Manchester City who beat Leeds United 7-0 on Tuesday.
With Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones all ruled out for the hosts, Jonjo Shelvey struck the opener for Newcastle against the run of play in the seventh minute, with a swerving, dipping drive past unsighted goalkeeper Allison Becker.
The lead lasted 14 minutes before Diogo Jota fired home the rebound after Martin Dubravka saved his initial header to level, with Newcastle’s players complaining the ball should have been put out of play as Isaac Hayden was down injured in his own box.
Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead four minutes later and Alexander-Arnold got the third with an 87th-minute rocket to wrap up a win that leaves Newcastle second-bottom on 10 points.

43 mins: Almost. Saint-Maximin makes a decent run into the box after Konate gives the ball away. He drives towards the centre-backs and has options on either side. Fraser is free on the left and gesturing for the ball but Saint-Maximin is forced to the right and his eventually cutback is intercepted by a back-tracking Henderson.

40 mins: Newcastle have been totally under the pump for the last 10 minutes or so. Robertson swings another Liverpool corner into the box but once again the visitors’ centre-backs are up to the task.
Salah is then given the ball on the right side and he looks to drive into the box. Joelinton is back to help out and he holds off Liverpool’s talisman, wins the ball with a fine tackle and works it clear for Newcastle.

37 mins: Chance! How’s this one not gone in? Oxlade-Chamberlain volleys a long cross-field pass over to Salah on the right who brings the ball into the box with a dainty header. As the ball drops he snatches at it with his right-foot and pulls his shot back across goal but sends to wide of the far post!

34 mins: Robertson swings a corner into the penalty area for Liverpool but Lascelles is there to head it out of the box. Oxlade-Chamberlain chests the ball down and blasts a shot from range. He doesn’t catch it well though and spoons the ball high and wide!

31 mins: Chance! Salah chips a pass into the box towards Mane but it’s headed out by Schar. Henderson gets to the ball and knocks it back into the penalty area where Jota spins into a volley and rattles a shot over the crossbar!

28 mins: Mo Salah scores again against Newcastle to give Liverpool the lead. They’ve upped the tempo on Newcastle with crosses flying in from both sides. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can’t pick out a teammate in the box and Jamaal Lascelles heads the ball clear.
Earlier Allan Saint-Maximin was sent forward on a breakaway for Newcastle. He took the ball to the edge of the box and fired off a shot but was denied by the outstretched hand of Alisson in Liverpool’s goal.

25 mins: A mistake from Shelvey leads to a goal from Salah! Jonjo Shelvey plays a blind pass back towards his own centre-backs and just sends it into the box for Sadio Mane. Fabian Schar almost hacks him down in the box but Mane stays on his feet and gets off a shot. Martin Dubravka stops it with his left leg but the ball rolls out to Mo Salah who coolly slots it into the open goal! Liverpool have the lead.

21 mins: Liverpool are level! Newcastle are not happy. The Reds swing a corner into the box and Newcastle head it away. Isaac Hayden and Fabian Schar collide with each other and Hayden stays down as Alexander-Arnold recovers the ball and quickly plays it into the box for Mane. Mane flicks it over to Jota who heads it at goal. Dubravka leaps across and keeps it out with a sharp save but the rebound comes back to Jota who blasts it into the back of the net.

19 mins: The ball bounces around the midfield and Fabian Schar overcommits as Mane heads it down to Jota. Schar lunges across in a needless tackle and fails to get there allowing Jota to fly into the box. The rest of the Newcastle defence are playing catch-up to close him down but he squeezes off a shot towards the left-hand post and fires it into the side-netting.

17 mins: Henderson whips a glorious ball out to Salah on the right side. Salah keeps the ball in play and carries it into the box. Sadio Mane makes a run into the six-yard area and Salah attempts to pick him out but Ritchie blocks the pass behind for a corner.
The corner comes into the middle of the box. Ibrahima Konate gets up to meet the ball but fires a headed effort wide of the near post.
