Liverpool came from behind to knock AC Milan out of Europe with a 2-1 victory at San Siro on Tuesday, as goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi helped a second-string Reds side finish the Champions League group stage with a perfect record.

Milan needed to win to stand any chance of progressing to the last 16 and went in front through England defender Fikayo Tomori in the first half, to the delight of the home support.

But Salah soon equalised with his 20th goal of the season in all competitions and Origi, who came on to score a stoppage-time winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday, headed home Liverpool’s second after the break.

Juergen Klopp’s side became the first English team to win every Champions League group game in a single campaign, finishing top of Group B with 18 points.

The atmosphere at the San Siro could not be more different to what Manchester City just experienced at the RB Arena. It’s a packed house, flags are waving, fans are chanting and there’s a sense of anticipation around the ground.

Both sides make their way out onto the pitch, Liverpool can become the first English team to win every one of their six group stage matches in the Champions League with victory tonight.

Milan need to win and hope other results go their way in order to reach the last-16.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s changes

We want to win the football game, that’s why we selected the line-up we have tonight.

“This is the only game where we can really change things. It’s my first time in this stadium and I thought ‘wow’.

“The pitch is not so good but the rest is outstanding. So we come here and we want to give it a go.

“We shouldn’t make much of these kinds of occasions. He {Tyler Morton] is ready for us and that’s why he is playing. I’m happy we could give him this opportunity.

“They have to win. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is probably as old as my whole bench! It’s just a nice opportunity.”

The advertising signs around the perimeter of the pitch sporadically read ‘priceless’, but the only thing about this game which fit that description was the reminder of how much better the game has been since fans returned.

With the Covid situation escalating once more, RB Leipzig are one of the teams playing behind closed doors and viewers were served up the type of fixture everyone hoped had been consigned to 2020/21 for the most part: a backdrop entirely empty, soundless, soulless.

AC Milan vs Liverpool: Unwanted legend Divock Origi revels as Liverpool’s underestimated understudy

Divock Origi, the legend, came and finished it off for us,” smiled Jurgen Klopp.

The legend of Barcelona, Tottenham, Everton, Everton and Everton may also be the legend of Wolves now. Saturday’s winner at Molineux may have transported Liverpool back to 2019, to the time when Origi felt deadly in short bursts and likely to provide late drama.

But part of the curiosity of Origi, the Champions League final scorer that season who has rarely been a regular for Liverpool, is that he was the unwanted legend.

AC Milan vs Liverpool

Liverpool have not lost in the Champions League this season and hav already secured assured top spot in the group but all three of the other teams in Group B are in the running to claim the runners-up spot.

Porto currently occupy the position on five points, one more than both Milan and Atletico Madrid. A win for the Portuguese side at home to Atletico will seal it.

However, should both Atletico and Milan win it will come down to goal difference as they are tied on their head-to-head record. The Italian side are currently one goal better off than Diego Simeone’s team so they’ll be throwing everything at Liverpool tonight to earn a win.
