From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The transfer window will finally close this week which means that it’s set to be a busy few days for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and the rest of the Premier League as every club scrambles to bolster their squad before the deadline.

Manchester United have dominated the headlines in recent days, wrapping up a record deal for Leicester's Harry Maguire. The defender is set to be announced as the club's latest signing in the coming days. United also continue to be linked with a transfer for Juventus' Paulo Dybala, with striker Romelu Lukaku poised to move the other way.

Arsenal have also spent big and signed Nicolas Pepe earlier this week, while they continue to work on a deal for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney. Review all of Monday's rumours below:

The summer transfer window closes at 5pm on Wednesday 8 August for all Premier League and Championship clubs, with teams in League One, League Two and across Europe able to sign new players until 11pm on Monday 2 September.

“Today, at this time, it's ruled out.”

The Neymar transfer saga will not conclude with the Brazilian forward rejoining Barcelona, the club's vice-president has confirmed.

Crystal Palace are leading the race to sign free agent and former England international Gary Cahill.

The 33-year-old left Chelsea in June after seven years at the club when his contract expired and is looking for a new club.

Burnley have been linked but The Sun claim Palace are willing to meet his £75k-a-week wage demands.

Manchester City are in talks with Juventus over signing Portugal right-back Joao Cancelo.

The deal will see defender Danilo, who City signed from Real Madrid for £26.5m in 2017, moving the other way.

Cancelo joined Juventus from Valencia for £35m in 2018 and was part of the Portugal squad that won the Nations League this summer, although he did not play.

Messi a Barcelona injury concern

Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Barcelona's pre-season match in the US after pulling out of a training session with a calf strain.

"First team player Leo Messi, who had returned from his summer break for training on Monday, withdrew from the session due to discomfort in his right leg. Tests carried out have diagnosed a Grade 1 calf strain for the Argentine.

"Messi will remain in Barcelona and will now not travel to the USA for the club's tour. His availability to come back to action will be dictated by his recovery from the injury."

Emery only looking for the right player

Arsenal will not panic at the end of the transfer window and risk signing a player that will not fit into the side in an attempt to hastily bolster their defence, Unai Emery confirmed.

"It has not changed, our idea and our message," he said when asked about signing defenders.

"Only if we can sign a player who really, really can improve our squad, then we are going to do that. If not, then not.

"We have good competitive players to achieve or try to achieve our target this season and we are going to be looking at something if we can sign someone, but with this idea. Only, and only, if we can improve."

Leicester City have identified a replacement for Manchester United-bound Harry Maguire, according to reports.

The Sun claims that Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is eyeing Kristoffer Ajer as a late summer signing.

Rodgers worked with £15million-rated centre-back Ajer, 21, during his time at Celtic.

Although happy with his current centre-back options at Leicester, which include Jonny Evans, Caglar Soyuncu and captain Wes Morgan, Rodgers is an admirer of the Norway international and has reportedly placed him on his long-term shortlist.
