Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow live updates from the Premier League as Spurs begin their campaign against newly promoted Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Villa come up with plenty of ambition having made a raft of new signings in the transfer window to bolster a side that already contains the quality of Jack Grealish and John McGinn.

Spurs have added quality of their own through the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele and will hope they can do something special in the first full season at their shiny new stadium. Follow it live:

Prediction...

Villa to give Tottenham a really good game but fall short, losing 1-0.

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

50 minutes

Big chance! Lamela's cross misses everyone and runs through to Sissoko six yards out. The Frenchman has all the time in the world to pick his spot, but drags his effort well wide of the far post. Spurs should be level.

More unconvincing defending from Spurs. Rose, in an attempt to clear, fires the ball at McGinn, whose first touch is slightly too heavy. Winks gets across to intercept and clatters into McGinn in the process. But Villa's appeals for a penalty are turned down.

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Kane is persistent, and looks determined to make amends for his earlier misses. He fires off a left-footed shot which deflects wide, and Villa deal with the two corners that follow.

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Ndombele hits an audacious shot from about 30 yards out. It's high and wide, and not what Spurs need. They've kept the pressure on relatively well early in the second half, but attempts like that will be welcomed by Villa.

Villa make their first change: Jota, signed from Birmingham in the summer, makes his debut, in place of Trezeguet.

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

61 minutes

There's a pause in play for a VAR check after McGinn goes into a challenge on Walker-Peters. There's a bit of pushing and a slight confrontation, but nothing that warrants a red card. Play on.

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Spurs work the ball patiently on the edge of Villa's box. The move ends in a shot from Walker-Peters, which is deflected over the bar.

Pochettino has seen enough: Christian Eriksen is on for Winks. Can the Dane make the difference?

Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

65 minutes

The corner that follows Walker-Peters' shot is glanced over the bar by Alderweireld, who finds space at the near post. Villa have defended set pieces brilliantly throughout, but that was a chance for the Tottenham defender.

Kane looks to latch onto a long ball over the top of the Villa defence, but Heaton is out quickly to head clear. But he picks out Lamela, who has an empty net to aim at from around 40 yards out. His effort is on target, but Mings reads it excellently and calmly comes away with the ball.
