Villa come up with plenty of ambition having made a raft of new signings in the transfer window to bolster a side that already contains the quality of Jack Grealish and John McGinn.
Spurs have added quality of their own through the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele and will hope they can do something special in the first full season at their shiny new stadium. Follow it live:

The home fans are getting increasingly restless as half time approaches. Lamela picks out Sissoko in the box, and the Frenchman appears to have time and space on the ball. But his first touch is heavy and Villa clear.

Winks hits a hopeful shot from distance on his left foot. Predictably, it flies well wide of the far post. Spurs look bereft of ideas, and they've lacked the patience to break down an impressively resolute Villa side.

Winks does brilliantly to stop a Villa break and keep the pressure on the visitors. Tottenham work the ball to Kane, who attempts to link up with Ndombele on the edge of the box. Again, though, the attack breaks down.

An incisive, free-flowing Spurs move ends with Ndombele chipping the ball onto the head of Kane, who can only guide the ball over the bar from close range. Tottenham will need to do more of that after the break if they're to turn this game around.

Lamela sets Kane through on goal and an equaliser seems inevitable. Surprisingly, though, he drags his finish wide. The flag was up anyway, but Kane looks a little rusty.
Half time: And that's it for the first half. It's been a dream start for Villa, who began nervously but have grown in confidence and played with intelligence and maturity. If they continue to defend as well as they did in the opening 45 minutes, Spurs may struggle to find a way back into this one.

Spurs start quickly, forcing Villa into more good defending. Lamela breaks into the box but can't find space to shoot. Sissoko heads the ball on in an attempt to keep the attack alive. But Engels, who's been solid on his debut, manages to clear.
