Brighton drew with Southampton at St Mary’s on Thursday, missing out on a chance to secure their place in next season’s Premier League.

Neal Maupay opened the scoring on 17 minutes as the visitors looked set to guarantee their survival, but Danny Ings struck his 20th league goal of the season shortly after the hour mark to ensure the points were shared.

What are the odds?

Southampton – 13/10

Draw – 5/2

Brighton – 5/2

Prediction

Both teams will want to get on the ball and control possession, which could lead to an open match with counter-attacks aplenty and chances at both ends. Saints are more clinical, so they win.

38 mins: Danny Ings is denied. He makes a run into the box as the ball is played through. He meets it and shoots. The bll squirts underneath Ryan and Lamptey is unable to clear the ball and it goes into the net.

Then the offside flag is raised.

42 mins: Webster clears a cross directed at Obafemi out for a corner. Southampton fires the corner into the box. It's defended back out to him and he returns it to the penalty area. Ryan grabs the ball to end the attack.

45 mins: Three minutes to be added on at the end of this half. Brighton win a corner but McCarthy comes and claims it as it is whipped into the box.

45+3 mins: Not a lot to smile about for Southampton. Brighton started the game looking very shaky at the back but the goal seems to have settled them.

They lead at the break.

Second half: Two changes made by Raplh Hasenhuttl at the break. Romeu and Obafemi are off with Walker-Peters and Adams coming on for Southampton.

48 mins: Poor from Brighton. Trossard cuts out a pass from Vestergaard and sends Brighton forward on the break. He's got Maupay on the left and Murray on his right. Trossard tries to pick out Maupay but the pass is awful and he gives it to Walker-Peters instead. The Seagulls had a decent attack going there but messed it up.

51 mins: Danny Ings beats two Brighton defenders on his way into the box. It's an unlikely run that just keeps going, Dunk finally wins the ball and Ings fouls him trying to get it back.

Michael Jones16 July 2020 21:25

54 mins: Fine work from Walker-Peters who takes the ball off Propper and runs it up to Adams. He's forced to pass the ball over to Vokins making his way up from the back. Vokins has a go from 25 yards out and just misses to the right of goal.
