But there was disappointment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side who were five minutes away from a win before Liverpool substitute Adam Lallana grabbed an equaliser for the league leaders to cancel out Marcus Rashford's 36th minute opener.
United are now unbeaten in their last seven home games against Liverpool, whose lead over second-placed Manchester City is cut to six points.
Rashford scored after turning home a superb low cross from Dan James after the speedy Welshman had broken down the right flank.
The goal was subject to a video review and allowed to stand despite Liverpool claims that Victor Lindelof had fouled Divock Origi at the start of the move.
Liverpool thought they had got level, two minutes before the interval, when Sadio Mane outfought Lindelof and poked home but the VAR review showed the Senegalese forward had handled the ball.
But Juergen Klopp's side, who had struggled to find openings, finally broke through in the 85th minute when Lallana slotted home Andy Robertson's low cross.

The news is far more positive for Liverpool in the goalkeeper department. Alisson Becker is set to return from injury and should replace Adrian.
Joel Matip is also expected to be restored to the starting XI having recovered from a calf injury. But there is no Mohamed Salah, who picked up a knock against Leicester before the international break.
Odds
Manchester United 9/2
Draw 3/1
Liverpool 4/6
Prediction
Liverpool should have too much for an out of form, depleted United side, but it’s unlikely to be the easy victory some expect.
Manchester United 1-2 Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been talking to the media before the start of the game, about his formation and the return of his players from injury:
"They are quality players and good to have around. David [De Gea] has adamant that he was going to make it [back from injury] and he's declared himself fit. You want players playing big games and that's important because he's a leader for us.
"We're going to try to win the game, if you settle for a draw or second best I don't think that suits us. We've got to go attack when we get the spaces, we've got to be on the front foot and we've got to play forward as much as we can.
"Let's hope we take our chances. Of course it can look like we don't have the confidence in front of goal. When it's going against you, you think twice and you don't make enough runs and you're not positive. You don't take the risks. Today is about letting the boys express themselves, we know not many people give us a chance in this game which suits us.
"We've set the team up to create a problem for them. For me it's about giving us the best possibly chance to score goals and create chances."
An important message coming out of Old Trafford today as well as all around the football league this weekend, take a look:
Ten minutes until kick off, who are you going for?
A big Liverpool win is the obvious choice but I think Man Utd will pull off a scrappy, hard fought win to end Liverpool's great run of form.
It just feels like one of those days. My prediction is 2-1 to Manchester United, optimistic I know
Team news
There is a late change to Manchester United's starting XI. Axel Tuanzebe suffered a hip strain in the warm ups and is replaced with Marcos Rojo.
The sides leave the tunnel and come out on to the pitch.
Jose Mourinho has just said on Sky Sports that Manchester United's only chance is to play from the heart.
They don't have the quality or the tactics but if they have the heart they could pull it off
