Lionel Messi's solitary first-half goal was enough for Argentina to get the better of their old foe Brazil in Saudi Arabia.

Brazil had the first clear opportunity when Gabriel Jesus earned a penalty, but the Manchester City forward registered the fifth missed penalty of his young career, steering the ball wide of the post having sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Messi earned a penalty of his own a few minutes later when Alex Sandro tripped him in the box, although the contact appeared minimal. Messi got up to take the kick himself and although Alisson Becker saved his initial shot, the Liverpool keeper couldn't hold on to the ball and it squirmed loose for Messi to tap home.

Argentina were forced to dig deep at times in the second half although they also missed chances to wrap up the match. Re-live the game in Riyadh:

KICK-OFF!

We are back under way in Saudi Arabia.

Lawrence Ostlere15 November 2019 18:09

Lionel Messi, by the way, now has 69 international goals, a solid 29 behind his old friend Cristiano Ronaldo who scored a hat-trick last night.

Jesus has another opportunity but can't quite make room enough for a shot. A moment later he feeds Willian on the edge of the box and he produces some typically quick footwork before drilling a shot straight into Otamendi. In the following tussle for the ball, Otamendi lands awkwardly on his shoulder.

Otamendi is being looked at on the touchline, but is OK to continue.

Argentina almost create something on the counter-attack, but Lionel Messi is stopped at the last moment.

Militao scythes down Messi and he's the latest player in the book.

Messi goes close with a long free-kick, Alisson tipping the ball over the bar. It's fair to say that Messi's free-kick was probably closer to going in than his penalty.

A number of subs coming on here, among them Everton's Richarlison and Real Madrid's Rodrygo for Brazil, replacing Jesus and Willian.

Some feisty tackles coming in. Parades is booked, and becomes the sixth player to see yellow, while Tagliafico times a hard one perfectly.
