From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Real Madrid have beaten Liverpool FC to claim the Champions League title and lift the European Cup for a third year in a row.

Madrid's victory makes it a record 13 overall and denies Liverpool a sixth crown in their first final since 2007 after last winning it in the memorable 2005 final.

Cristiano Ronaldo was fit and firing but his battle with Mohamed Salah was cut short after the Egyptian was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half.

Here's how it all played out in Kiev:

What time is it?

The game will kick off in Kiev at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium at 7.45pm BST on Saturday 26 May.

Where can I watch it?

The final will be shown live on BT Sport 2 from 7pm BST and also available to watch for free on YouTube. Alternatively, you can follow The Independent’s live coverage above.

Jordan Henderson is lining up next to Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid in the Champions League final. What a sentence. Kick off is around five minutes away!

Admit it, this is incredible.

Milorad Mazic of Serbia is the man in the middle this evening, and possibly the most nervous person on the pitch given it's his first Champions League tie since the group stage.

We're off!

Liverpool get the 2018 Champions League final underway

1: Casemiro gives the ball away and the Liverpool front three pounce. Roberto Firmino moves the ball onto Mo Salah who tries to find Sadio Mane in the box but Sergio Ramos is on hand to cut the ball out.

2: This is certainly a predominantly Liverpool crowd. Boos ring out from the stand when Real Madrid get the ball and 'Allez-Allez-Allez' has been ringing around the stadium for the last half hour.

3: It's like Real Madrid have never watched Liverpool play before. Casemiro again loses possession and Mo Salah finds Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right who tries to pick out Roberto Firmino in the middle but his low cross is blocked.

5: Marcelo is already losing in his battle to contain Mo Salah, he concedes a foul on the right wing.

James Milner pulls a clever pass back to Salah who sees a shot blocked.

7: Roberto Firmino picks up the ball from deep and almost finds Sadio Mane who runs in behind. The ball in behind the defence is dealt with by Raphael Varane who slides in to intercept.

8: Liverpool are finding it very easy to work their way though the Real Madrid lines and they are the much better team in these first few minutes. The press is working and it seems it will only be a matter of time before they find a way through. Cue Ronaldo's inevitable goal...
