Manchester United progressed to the semi-finals of the Europa League with an extra-time win over a dogged Anderlecht.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave the home side the lead within the first ten minutes and United looked to be on course for an easy win.

But Sofiane Hanni leveled the scores, leaving United to require an extra-time goal from Marcus Rashford to progress to the last four.

Preview

Jose Mourinho decided to rest his star men Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday, in a huge risk that happened to pay off. With a crucial mid-week tie at home to Belgian side Anderlecht lurking and with Zlatan's game-time requiring careful management (he has already appeared 45 times for the club this season), a rest could only be a good thing.

United will be without Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata, who all miss out due to injury. But Wayne Rooney will likely return to the bench, after the striker recovered from an ankle injury. United will be in a jubilant mood following their 2-0 win over Chelsea and we can expect them to come down hard on the Belgian side as seek a spot in the semi-finals.

Anderlecht currently sit top of the Jupiler League and have not lost in their past seven matches. A win over United would give them their first semi-finals in a European competition since 1990. At first glance it looks a tall ask for the Belgian side, who don’t boast the class or big names that United possess, but having forced a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg, the tie remains open.

Luke Shaw. The defender may be given a chance to finally prove himself under Jose Mourinho. He wasn’t in Mourinho’s starting eleven against Chelsea on Sunday and could well be given a chance this evening, Shaw will have a lot of work to do to counter the recent criticism of him by the United boss.

Marcus Rashford. The young striker may have big shoes to fill next season. It has yet to be decided where Zlatan will be next season and Rashford may be next in line for the throne should the Swede choose not to remain at United.

Rashford had a cracking game against Chelsea where he stunned the Premier League leaders with the opening goal. He is a man in form and will pose a stern test to the Anderlecht defence.

The supporters are in the stadium!

Here's the Anderlecht boys...

And the United lads...

Thank god for crowd segregation 'ey, because that doesn't particularly look like a fair fight.

The teams are on the pitch! And the sound system is currently blaring out the two-bob version of the Champions League anthem which - in case you haven't heard it - is pish.

Kick-off is just moments away!

Anderlecht have SIX players on yellow cards heading into this match, including their entire midfield. They're going to have to be very careful this evening.

1 min: Here we go! United kick-off and are instantly on the front-foot, with Valencia winning a throw deep into Anderlecht territory.

3 mins: So close from the away side!

First Acheampong gets on the ball down the left and edges his way into the box, but he drags his shot well wide and it's hacked clear by Rojo.

The ball falls to Dendoncker around 35-yards out and seemingly in a completely harmless position, but he attempts to catch Romero unawares with a vicious, dipping drive from distance. It whistles off his boot and only narrowly goes over!

5 mins: Mkhitaryan brings the ball forward for United and looks to have shrugged off the attentions of Appiah, but the defender gets a foot in and halts his progress. The Belgians sweep forward on the counter but Carrick disposses Tielemans with a thumping challenge.

It's been a great end to end start and Anderlecht certainly aren't here to sit deep and defend.

GOAL! Manchester United 1 Anderlecht 0 (Mkhitaryan '9)

The European scoring specialist gives United the lead!

10 mins: That was a really nice goal from Mkhitaryan, even if Anderlecht's defending left a lot to be desired. Pogba released Rashford down the left with an utterly fantastic pass, and the forward looks to square the ball to Ibrahimovic.

The ball is intercepted and deflects back to Rashford but rather than take on the shot himself, he gives it to Mkhitaryan running into the box. The Armenian is in space and is able to take a touch before driving the ball past Ruben.

Vithushan Ehantharajah20 April 2017 20:18

13 mins: United could, and probably should, be two up. First Pogba rises highest to meet Mkhitaryan's corner, but Ruben does very well to tip his effort around the post.

And then Lingard tries his luck from distance with a wonderful fizzed effort, which Ruben again tips around his left post with a superb flying stop.

Vithushan Ehantharajah20 April 2017 20:20

16 mins: Hanni looks to release Acheampong over the top but Valencia is alert to the danger. After that end-to-end opening five-minutes, United have looked very much in control.
