From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Antoine Griezmann's controversial first-half penalty handed Atletico Madrid a tight 1-0 win over gutsy Leicester in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The France striker was fouled outside the box by Marc Albrighton but referee Jonas Erikssson pointed to the spot - yet their European hopes remain alive.

It was deja vu for Leicester after another dubious penalty at the Vicente Calderon helped knock them out of the UEFA Cup in 1997.

RED CARD! Javi Martinez has been sent off for Bayern Munich!

61 mins: A moment of madness for Martinez. Already on a booking, the defender hangs out a leg as Ronaldo skips past him, which the Portuguese gratefully trips over. No arguments with that one: a clear yellow, and he's off.

Meanwhile, Madrid make a change:

64 mins: A good chance for Madrid as they win a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Bayern make a change: Costa replaces Ribery.

65 mins: Ramos takes the set-piece but curls it wide.

In Madrid, Leicester are continuing to hang on by the skin of their teeth.

69 mins: 10-man Bayern ring the changes:

71 mins: Real are in complete control of this one, and are looking for a second. Marcelo cuts inside, lays off Modric, who in turn plays the ball to Benzema. He looks to roll Asensio into possession down the right-hand side of the box, but the youngster doesn't quite read him.

The ball is whacked clear. Real come again.

73 mins: Yet another incredible save from Manuel Neuer!

This time, Madrid's intricate passing move pays off, with Benzema finding himself one-on-one with Neuer with the whole goal at his mercy. He shoots low, but the German stopper throws himself towards the ball, flicking it around the post with his left boot. Sensational.

75 mins: And another!

Casemiro shoots from just outside the box but again Neuer is equal to it, turning the ball away instinctively with his right fist.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1 Real Madrid 2 (Ronaldo '77)

Ronaldo brings Manuel Neuer's run of heroics to an end with a close-range finish.
