England get away with one, but also get a lot to think about.

Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal with a contentious late penalty, to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany that Gareth Southgate’s side probably didn’t deserve. The mixed feelings were further emphasised by the context. This was undeniably a good result, from a middling performance, that also represents the first time that England have failed to win two consecutive games since June 2019.

That stat shows how far they’ve come, but maybe reminds there is also a bit to go. It was not a quirk that they failed to win this game, for all the caveats of a Nations League game.

The most notable aspect of the match was how Germany looked like they would play this way regardless of the fixture.

Hansi Flick has given them a new identity, that is itself so easy to see. It is something England still lack, and does raise more questions about what next for the summer. It is not all Southgate is missing, mind.

His side also lack the kind of notional holding midfielder that can play the sort of through ball Joshua Kimmich did in the 50th minute of this match, so divinely setting up Jonas Hofmann for his third international goal.

England did rally, though, which is to their credit.

Follow all the match reaction from Munich below:

Germany 0-0 England

45+3 mins: A first chance for Bukayo Saka who is played into the right side of the box and fizzes a shot at Manuel Neuer who calmly tips it over the crossbar.

The resultant corner it swung in by Trippier who picks out Declan Rice but he can’t find a teammate with his glancing header over to the far side of the box.

Germany 0-0 England

45 mins: Chance! Kimmich lifts a free kick into the England box where Schlotterbeck wins the header and knocks it down to the near post. It’s cleared to the edge of the box but Musiala runs onto it and drills a shot straight into the hands of Jordan Pickford.

Eight minutes of added time to play.

Germany 0-0 England

42 mins: It’s been all Germany for the second part of this first half. England haven’t been able to keep the ball and have found themselves under threat from a highly effective German press.

Havertz is getting stuck into the England defence. Walker leans into the forward to keep him off the ball and Havertz has a little tug of his shirt, giving away a free kick and easing the pressure on England.

Germany 0-0 England

39 mins: Close! David Raum bombs forward for the Germans and combines with Musiala to open England up. Raum floats a cross to the back post where Havertz climbs over Trippier but can’t guide a headed effort on target as Trippier does enough in the air to knock it wide.

Germany 0-0 England

37 mins: Sterling hobbles around for a couple of minutes but seems to have run off his knock. Hofman makes a run down the left wing for Germany and squeezes in behind Walker but firing a wild cross over to the opposite side of the box.

Germany 0-0 England

34 mins: Raheem Sterling has a problem now. He seemed to run into Joshua Kimmich and hurt his right leg. He goes down clutching his hamstring but after a breather and a rub down will play on.

Germany 0-0 England

31 mins: Kieran Trippier and Jonas Hofman come toghether and both players need a bit of treatment before play can continue. The game is being played at a quick, upbeat tempo with both sides going for it.

Hofman and Trippier are back on their feet and look set to play on.

Germany 0-0 England

28 mins: Bellingham’s high pressing wins the ball back for England and it pokes it into the box for Kane. Kane drives towards goal before squaring a pass into the six yard box but there’s noone there to get on the end of it.

Germany then sweep down the pitch and flick the ball into the box towards Kai Havertz who flicks it on towards the near post and sends it straight into the hands of Pickford.

Germany 0-0 England

25 mins: The check took a couple of minutes but the original decision stands and the goal does not. England and Harry Maguire in particular get a reprieve.

Michael Jones7 June 2022 20:10

Germany 0-0 England

23 mins: Disallowed goal! Jonas Hofman finds the back of the net for Germany! A long ball comes up the pitch and Kai Havertz rolls off Harry Maguire allowing the ball to bounce through to Hofman who makes a run in behind. He carries the ball into the box and guides it calmly past Pickford with his right foot then the offside flag goes up.

VAR is going to check it though.
