England get away with one, but also get a lot to think about.
Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal with a contentious late penalty, to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany that Gareth Southgate’s side probably didn’t deserve. The mixed feelings were further emphasised by the context. This was undeniably a good result, from a middling performance, that also represents the first time that England have failed to win two consecutive games since June 2019.
That stat shows how far they’ve come, but maybe reminds there is also a bit to go. It was not a quirk that they failed to win this game, for all the caveats of a Nations League game.
The most notable aspect of the match was how Germany looked like they would play this way regardless of the fixture.
Hansi Flick has given them a new identity, that is itself so easy to see. It is something England still lack, and does raise more questions about what next for the summer. It is not all Southgate is missing, mind.
His side also lack the kind of notional holding midfielder that can play the sort of through ball Joshua Kimmich did in the 50th minute of this match, so divinely setting up Jonas Hofmann for his third international goal.
England did rally, though, which is to their credit.

56 mins: Here’s a chance for England. Muller catches the back of Saka’s legs and gives away a free kick just outside the penalty area over on the left.
Trippier, Mount, Saka and Kane are all stood over the ball. Trippier taps it to Kane who strikes one on the turn and blasts his effort into the wall.

53 mins: England win the ball back in midfield - it’s Bellingham again - and he dinks the ball up to Mount who drives towards goal. He’s got Kane and Sterling as options to either side but Mount lets fly from the edge of the box and forces Neuer into a sharp save to his right.

50 mins: This one will stand for Jonas Hofman! Kai Havertz brings the ball into England’s final third from the right and comes inside. He lays it off to Joshua Kimmich who threads a lovely pass into the box for Hofman. Hofman lets the ball run, turns towards goal the fizzes his effort past Jordan Pickford!

48 mins: Sterling is punished for a foul on Kimmich. Germany have picked up where they left off in the first half. Dominating possession and looking to force England back into their own half.
Kimmich feeds the ball up to Musiala who’s drifted inside. He flicks the ball over to Havertz who is almost in behind England’s line but he gets caught by Rice who recovers the ball for the Three Lions.

Kick off: Germany get the match back underway at the Allianz Arena. No further changes from Gareth Southgate but it seems as though England may have moved into a 4-3-3 with Saka dropping into midfield alongside Rice and Bellingham.

In the other Nations League game taking place in England’s group tonight Italy are beating Hungary 2-0 at half-time. Meaning that if things stay as they are England will be bottom of the group with just one point.

45+8 mins: An interesting if not massively thrilling first half comes to an end with nothing to separate the teams. Both have had chances to score and Germany even had a goal chalked off.
The hosts have probably edged it in terms of chances and inspiration but the signs are there that England have a goal in them.

45+6 mins: Close! There’s not much else on for Bukayo Saka who receives the ball and spins away from a defender before cutting inside onto his left foot. He drills his shot towards the far bottom corner and has Manuel Neuer worried. The goalkeeper leaps over to his right but the effort goes wide of the post!
