Roman Abramovich makes ‘incredibly difficult decision’ to sell Chelsea

Follow live reaction from this afternoon’s Premier League fixtures, after Chelsea swept Burnley aside in the second half to consolidate their place in the top four. Burnley will look back with regret after not taking their early chances but Chelsea were too good in the second half, with the returning Reece James producing an outstanding display on his first start since his injury lay-off. The wing-back fired Chelsea in front shortly after the break, as Thomas Tuchel’s side scored three times in the space of seven minutes.

Kai Havertz added the other two, steering in an excellent header from Christian Pulisic’s cross before tapping in James’ delivery from the right. Pulisic made it four for Chelsea late on to punish Burnley, who remain in the bottom three after suffering back-to-back defeats this week.

Elsewhere, Newcastle took a huge step towards survival after edging Brighton, while Brentford claimed an important win at Norwich to all but condemn Dean Smith’s side to the drop. Philippe Coutinho inspired Aston Villa to thrash Southampton, while Crystal Palace inflicted a third straight defeat for Wolves ahead of Liverpool’s evening clash with West Ham at Anfield.

Liverpool 0-0 West Ham

CHANCE! It should be 1-0 to Liverpool! Quick thinking from Alexander-Arnold sees him play Salah into space, with just Fabianski to beat! But the goalkeeper stands tall and makes the save with his right hand as Salah looked for the corner.

Of all the players to leave open, but brilliant thinking from Alexander-Arnold to take the free kick from his own half quickly. It’s not the first time he’s done that...

David Moyes explains illness behind Declan Rice missing out against Liverpool

David Moyes has explained Declan Rice is out of today’s game at Anfield due to not feeling well this week - but he’s not anticipating too much of an upset in terms of his team shape and style without him.

“Illness. He’s felt it through the week so unable to play,” he has said before kick-off.

“He missed five at the end of last season so we’ll get on with it. He’s a big miss but it’s not a huge rejig of the team, no.

“It’s a busy period but we’re still in the FA Cup and Europe. We’ll go about it today the same way - we’ve got a resilient group.”

Kai Havertz scores twice as Chelsea thrash Burnley with super second-half show

Chelsea stunned Burnley with three goals in the space of nine second-half minutes on their way to a 4-0 victory at Turf Moor.

Reece James, making his first start of 2022 after injury, got the first a couple of minutes into the second half and then had a hand in the next two – both finished by Kai Havertz – with Burnley imploding as they lost back-to-back home league games for the first time this season.

It got worse for the hosts with a little more than 20 minutes to go when a mistake from James Tarkowski left Christian Pulisic with the easiest of finishes from barely a yard out.

Playing only their second league fixture since the 2-0 win over Tottenham on January 23 – during which time they have become world champions, advanced in the FA Cup and lost the Carabao Cup final – Chelsea strengthened their grip on third place with a seventh win in eight Premier League visits to Turf Moor.

FULL-TIME! Norwich 1-3 Brentford

MASSIVE win for Brentford and a crushing blow to Norwich, who are surely down after this result. But that’s the win that Brentford desperately needed, secured after Christian Eriksen made his first start for the Bees. Ivan Toney returned to the line-up, too, and his hat-trick, with two goals coming from the spot, made the difference.

FULL-TIME! Newcastle 2-1 Brighton

A huge win for Newcastle - and that’s five in their last six in the Premier League under Eddie Howe. They move to 28 points and seven points clear of relegation.

It’s full-time in the other 3pm kick-offs now as well.

FULL-TIME: Burnley 0-4 Chelsea

A very impressive second half from Chelsea, who blew Burnley away with three goals in the space of seven minutes. The brilliant Reece James and Kai Havertz did the damage, with Christian Pulisic adding a late fourth.

GOAL! Norwich 1-3 Brentford (PUKKI 90+3)

Norwich have one back but it’s too little, too late. Pukki adds another to his Premier League tally.

Burnley 0-4 Chelsea

85 mins: Chelsea have killed this off as a contest and there will be as many Burnley fans following developments elsewhere as time runs out at Turf Moor.

Newcastle’s game against Brighton is the only match which is heading down to the wire, with Eddie Howe’s holding a 2-1 lead at St James’.

Newcastle are heading seven points clear of Burnley in what would be another huge win for the Magpies.

Brentford are also pulling themselves clear and are set to move six points ahead of Burnley, although Sean Dyche’s side will have two games in hand.
