Liverpool lifted themselves to the top of the Premier League following a 2-0 victory over Burnley on Boxing Day.

The Reds were held last time out in a thrilling stalemate against Arsenal, but bounced back against Vincent Kompany’s side.

The result looked in little doubt when Darwin Nunez scored in the 6th minute, but Burnley fought hard, and Liverpool had to wait until substitute Diogo Jota marked his return from injury with a 90th-minute goal to wrap up the victory.

Liverpool also had two disallowed goals and mostly dominated throughout, but there were warning signs from Burnley, but it was James Trafford’s effort in front of goal that ensured the game went as dep as it did.

The players have come out of the tunnel and are making their way onto the field, Liverpool in their green, white and black jackets, and Burnley in their home claret and blue kits.

Klopp added on the intensity levels of Liverpool in recent matches: “We actually saw it dropping a little bit. Traditionally it develops throughout the season, all the guys who have no injuries that’s how it is and you get through it and then all of a sudden you feel okay now then the intense games are kind of training sessions as well, they make you stronger and more resilient and that’s what happened.

“But we have to go again and show it tonight. I told the boys before the game, it’s about to show that we respect them as much as we respect Arsenal, because Arsenal play football, Burnley play football - you just have to be there and I hope we show the respect.”

When asked about the five changes, Klopp said: “It’s the fourth game in 10 days so we have to make changes. They were all ready, they all gave me thumbs up and said ‘I can go again’ but then you have the other players who don’t have the same intensity in their legs and we can change obviously and we will.

“This is the first time where we have a bench we can maybe make five changes properly where it doesn’t get too young immediately.

“Diogo Jota is back which is good, and hopefully he is ready for Newcastle.

“That’s it, it’s just the idea that we try to get fresh legs, because we will need it. Burnley is a football-playing side and we have to defend that properly and we can only do that with new legs.”

Jurgen Klopp shared his thoughts with Amazon Prime ahead of the match: “It’s a tough period and you play every three days, it’s just tough. You wake up and you think about the next opponent, so there’s nothing with records or anything - it’s not like ‘Boxing Day - that’s our day’, we come here and we have to be respectful of what they do and we have to be ready.

“We played a really really good game a few days ago, if we can play a similar game, we will be a difficult opponent and that’s the idea.”

Burnley has traditionally been considered a difficult place to travel to for visiting sides, however this season Kompany’s team have struggled at Turf Moor.

The Clarets have won just one of their nine matches at home, losing the other eight, a stat which bodes well for Liverpool.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool cope with the absence of Tsimikas as Joe Gomez is not a naturally left-sided defender.

However, he is experienced, having already made 124 Premier League appearances.
