Liverpool lifted themselves to the top of the Premier League following a 2-0 victory over Burnley on Boxing Day.

The Reds were held last time out in a thrilling stalemate against Arsenal, but bounced back against Vincent Kompany’s side.

The result looked in little doubt when Darwin Nunez scored in the 6th minute, but Burnley fought hard, and Liverpool had to wait until substitute Diogo Jota marked his return from injury with a 90th-minute goal to wrap up the victory.

Liverpool also had two disallowed goals and mostly dominated throughout, but there were warning signs from Burnley, but it was James Trafford’s effort in front of goal that ensured the game went as dep as it did.

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool will have to wrap Joe Gomez up in cotton wool to cope with their left-back injury crisis.

The Liverpool manager is not sure if the versatile Gomez will be able to start every match while he is without both Andy Robertson, who has been out since October with a dislocated shoulder, and Kostas Tsimikas, who broke his collarbone in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Robertson is expected to be out for another month while Tsimikas is a long-term absentee. The versatile Gomez, who has also featured at centre-back and right-back this season, came on for the Greek at Anfield and is set to stand in on the left.

Now Liverpool face a series of defining matches in the next month, including a Premier League clash with Newcastle, an FA Cup trip to Arsenal and both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham.

Boxing Day fixtures 2023: Every game and how to watch all five Premier League clashes on TV and online

Boxing Day is always an extra Christmas treat for football fans and Tuesday is no different, with five Premier League games staggered through the day, all being broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video – for the final time, after Amazon’s pivot to boxing starting next season.

There is also a stacked schedule in the Championship, including a top-of-the-table showdown between second-placed Ipswich and league leaders Leicester, as well as games throughout the Football League and one Scottish Premiership clash as Dundee travel to leaders Celtic.

Newcastle will aim to end their run of four consecutive defeats when they host Nottingham Forest at 12.30pm GMT, as Forest search for a first win under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Bournemouth and Fulham are both enjoying good seasons and the winner at the Vitality Stadium (3pm) could jump into the top half. An important relegation contest will get under way at Bramall Lane when Sheffield United host Luton Town (3pm), before the other side in the bottom three, Burnley, host title-chasing Liverpool (5.30pm).

Manchester United, now under new direction after the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos operation, take on high-flying Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the evening kick-off (8pm).

Here are all the Boxing Day fixtures and how to watch them (3pm GMT kick-off unless specified):

Liverpool close to free-flowing best but Arsenal draw exposes missing elements

A fine game, but perhaps the best result for the title race as a whole. Through that, it was maybe better for Manchester City than anyone else, too.

Liverpool, for the second big home match in a row, will believe they again left the full three points on the pitch. That will especially be the case every time they look at that break that ended with Trent Alexander-Arnold hitting the bar.

That’s also why Arsenal will ultimately be happier with the result. It just might still linger that they would like that big away win to really propel their campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side are top at Christmas, but not quite fully on top form. This draw displayed there’s now real substance, much more than last season. There isn’t, however, that elevated attacking coherence the league knows they can produce.

That can of course come. In many ways, as enjoyably excellent as this game became, it was maybe natural that a match between two of the three best sides in the Premier League ended up showcasing some remaining flaws in each other. That’s what they bring out in each other, as well as brilliance like the two goals. The exacting level from these huge matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were exceptional in moments, but still need development to return to the heights of 2019-20, with Arsenal’s flaws also on display in a thriller at Anfield
