Ramsdale back in Arsenal training before UCL trip to Sevilla

Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored either side of halftime as Arsenal completed a 2-1 Champions League victory at Sevilla, a hard-fought win that takes them to the top of Group B at the midway point of the group stage.

Martinelli raced clear from his own half to score the opener four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first period as he completed a lightning break, before Jesus added a second goal shortly after halftime.

Sevilla offered little in the first half and were much improved after the break as they pulled a goal back when Nemanja Gudelj headed home, but the equaliser they so desperately sought eluded them despite some near misses.

Arsenal top the group with six points from their three games. Lens are in second place with five points, followed by Sevilla and PSV Eindhoven with two each.

Arteta on young players taking on leadership roles

Mikel Arteta was asked about how important it is that young players like Bukayo Saka take on leadership roles within the Arsenal squad and he replied:

“I think is really important for them because the role that they have in our way of playing, in our team and in our club has to be mirrored with the leadership level that they should have around the team to make it grow.

“I think it’s been a perfect environment; we have a really good mixture of players, teams and experiences in that group and it’s going to be a really valuable time to spend with those guys to understand what happens behind the scenes as well.”

Mikel Arteta pinpoints moment Arsenal made ‘phenomenal’ response at Chelsea

Mikel Arteta praised a “phenomenal” response from Arsenal after they fought back from two goals down in the final 13 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw at Chelsea and move level on points at the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea looked to be sending Arsenal to a first league defeat of the season when Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross-shot put them into a 2-0 lead minutes after half-time, the Ukrainian’s effort drifting over goalkeeper David Raya who was unable to recover from a poor starting position as the ball dropped into the goal.

That added to the lead given to them by a first-half penalty from Cole Palmer, increasingly influential in Pochettino’s revitalised attack following his move from Manchester City, who slotted home after William Saliba was adjudged to have handled from Mudryk’s header.

Goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard snatched the Gunners what had seemed an unlikely point.

Declan Rice has made 32 progressive carries in the Champions League this season (moving 5+ metres upfield with the ball), with Manchester City’s Rodri (47) being the only defensive/central midfielder to have made more in the competition so far.

Gabriel Jesus has been involved in 20 goals across his 25 starts in the Champions League (17 goals, 3 assists). He could become just the second player to score in his first three games for Arsenal in the competition, after Marouane Chamakh in 2010/11.

Youssef En-Nesyri has scored nine goals in his last 14 Champions League appearances, including one in his last outing against PSV.

If he finds the net in this game, he will equal Wissam Ben Yedder’s record for the most European Cup/UEFA Champions League goals for Sevilla (10).

Arsenal last lost back-to-back group stage matches in the Champions League in 2015/16 which were the opening two games of that campaign.

They did still qualify for the knockout stages on that occasion but will be hoping to avoid a similar run of results this year.

Sevilla have only lost three of their 10 home matches against English sides in European competition, with the most recent game being a 3-0 victory against Manchester United in last season’s Europa League quarter-final.

Can Arsenal inflict another defeat on the Spaniards tonight?

Mikel Arteta hopes to be talking about football after Arsenal’s trip to Sevilla

Mikel Arteta is hoping he will be left talking about football after his Arsenal side take on Sevilla in Spain on Tuesday.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr was allegedly racially abused during Saturday’s LaLiga clash at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Vinicius later took to social media to praise staff in the ground for ejecting a fan and reporting him to the authorities.
