Ramsdale back in Arsenal training before UCL trip to Sevilla

Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored either side of halftime as Arsenal completed a 2-1 Champions League victory at Sevilla, a hard-fought win that takes them to the top of Group B at the midway point of the group stage.

Martinelli raced clear from his own half to score the opener four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first period as he completed a lightning break, before Jesus added a second goal shortly after halftime.

Sevilla offered little in the first half and were much improved after the break as they pulled a goal back when Nemanja Gudelj headed home, but the equaliser they so desperately sought eluded them despite some near misses.

Arsenal top the group with six points from their three games. Lens are in second place with five points, followed by Sevilla and PSV Eindhoven with two each.

Mikel Arteta on learning lessons from Lens defeat

Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, explained how his team has adapted from the defeat to Lens in their last Champions League outing.

“There were a few [lessons] from that game, especially that in the Champions League you cannot give anything away.” He said, “Both boxes are tremendously important to have control of the game, and there are going to be moments that can get away very quickly.

“You have to understand why this is happening and how the game went away from us, but there was a lot in our side. To lose the game the way we did, even though looking about two times, we didn’t deserve that result.”

Pre-match thoughts from Diego Alonso

Having signed on to manage Sevilla during the most recent international break Diego Alonso is looking forward to tonight’s encounter saying:

“Having not won in the two opening games of the competition, we need a win. Tomorrow we have that opportunity and we are ready for it. We’ll have to work our socks off for the whole 90 minutes. We’re facing a great team, but we’re ready.

“Motivating others should be organic. We are fully focused on tomorrow’s game on tomorrow’s game only. We will do our best to claim the three points. We are going to play as if it were a final.”

Sevilla vs Arsenal

Sevilla have found fixtures against English sides tough having won just two of their last nine matches against teams from England. Will they get back to winning ways against the Gunners tonight?

Sevilla vs Arsenal

Arsenal are looking to win their first Champions League away game since December 2016 when they defeated Basel 4-1. They have lost five of their last six away games to Spanish sides with one win breaking up that run.

However, Sevilla have only been victorious in two of their last nine home games in this competition so could be the team Arsenal need to play to get back to winning ways.

Focus on goalkeeping battle is strange says Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale feels it is “strange” how much attention is being paid to his battle with David Raya to be Arsenal number one – but admits he fears for his England future if he does not win it.

The 25-year-old signed a new contract last season but has found himself on the bench after summer signing Raya broke into the side and has started just once – a Carabao Cup win at Brentford – since mid-September.

Ramsdale picked up his fourth senior England cap in the 3-1 friendly win away to Scotland last month but was an unused substitute in the recent victories over Australia and Italy.

Arteta to stick with Raya

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is expected to remain in goal for their Champions League game against Sevilla at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Lens in their previous Group B fixture as Raya has been preferred to last season’s first-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in recent weeks.

However, the Spaniard was at fault for Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea and there were questions about whether he would be given the gloves for this evening’s clash.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I haven’t seen that at all [Raya struggling].

“That’s the pressure of playing in big clubs, where you have to win and you have to be at your best, and you have someone next to you who is pushing you every single day.

“That’s the debate. That’s the beauty of the game as well. The fact that you have other options as well is going to make that talk more frequent.”

Arsenal stun Chelsea to claim point amid chaos from goalkeeper howlers

Arsenal stung Chelsea with a stunning late fightback as they came from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Arteta’s side looked to be heading to a first defeat of the season when Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross-shot looped over David Raya minutes after the interval, adding to the lead given to them by Cole Palmer’s first-half penalty.

The visitors were far from their free-flowing best and Mauricio Pochettino’s side, inspired by the increasingly influential Palmer on the right of a front three, were for three-quarters of the game good value for what would have been a third straight league win.

Sevilla vs Arsenal prediction

Despite losing to Lens in their previous Champions League game, Arsenal will be confident of earning a win away from home this evening.

A narrow hard-earned away victory for Mikel Arteta’s side, against their inconsistent Spanish opponents, should be played out in Spain.

Sevilla 1-2 Arsenal.

Sevilla vs Arsenal team news

Sevilla have only two likely injury concerns with backup keeper Alfonso Pastor and striker Mariano Diaz dealing with knee and thigh niggles respectively.

Arsenal, too, have relatively few injury concerns with several key players returning in recent weeks. Jurien Timber remains a long-term absentee with any rotation likely to be tactical rather than enforced.
