Arsenal: Mikel Arteta comments on Odegaard's performance in Brighton win

Arsenal’s Premier League title charge was checked as the leaders could find no way through third-placed Newcastle United in a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Victory would have given Arsenal a 10-point lead but they had to make do with a point against a rock-solid Newcastle who defended superbly to remain unbeaten since August.

The closest the hosts came to breaking the deadlock was in the 87th minute when Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made a great save to keep out a low shot by Eddie Nketiah while Arsenal also had a vociferous late penalty claim waved away.

Newcastle, who have the stingiest defence in the top flight this season, were content to sit deep for most of the evening although Joelinton wasted a good opportunity before the break.

Arsenal frustrated by Newcastle to drop points in Premier League title race

It was Newcastle who put the final nail in Arsenal’s top four hopes last season, and it is Eddie Howe’s side who might just have cracked the first gap in the gleaming armour of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League title contenders. This 0-0 draw may not be as damaging as the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park back in May, but it will carry a similar feeling of irritation for the Gunners.

For Arsenal, at this stage, passing up the chance to move 10 points clear at the top of the table is hardly a disaster, but the frustration and fury written across Areta’s face and in every movement on the touchline was clear to see as his side dropped points.

Rather than a contest between two teams riding high in the table, this was an ill-tempered and ill-discplined affair but Newcastle made it so and seemed to trick Arsenal into joining them.

Howe will argue that Newcastle needed to take such an approach in order to become the first Premier League side apart from Arsenal to take points at the Emirates this season. In doing so, they have also passed a real test of their top-four credentials.

Full-time: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

90+5 mins: The points are shared at the Emirates Stadium! Newcastle’s defensive record holds up against the attacking might of Mikel Arteta’s young forward line.

Arsenal wanted a penalty for handball right at the end of the game which sees Arteta and Eddie Howe almost come to blows in the dugouts.

The Arsenal boss is fuming on the sidelines until the full-time whistle is blown. The Gunners’ lead at the top of the table goes to eight points but the door is ajar for Manchester City to close that to five on Thursday.

90+2 mins: Trippier fires another corner ball over to the back post where Joelinton brings the ball under control. He’s forced out wide by Saliba and can’t return the ball into the penalty area before it runs out for a goal kick.

Can one of these teams create a final chance to score?

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

90 mins: Newcastle are managing the game, eking out as much time as possible from every break in play.

There are going to be five minutes of added time to play which isn’t enough according to Mikel Arteta who begins to berate the assistant referee on the sidelines.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

88 mins: Save! Nick Pope keeps Newcastle on level terms after Granit Xhaka flicks the ball into the box and sends Eddie Nketiah in on goal.

He shoots and hits a decent effort towards the far corner but Pope sticks out his left leg and keeps out the shot!

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

85 mins: Arsenal are piling men forward now in a desperate search for a winning goal. Xhaka has a shot blocked so does Gabriel.

Martinelli is then fed the ball on the left side of the box and pulls it back into the area where Newcastle scoop it clear. Joe Willock goes down off the ball and can’t continue.

Allan Saint-Maximin replaces him.
