Arsenal: Mikel Arteta comments on Odegaard's performance in Brighton win

Arsenal’s Premier League title charge was checked as the leaders could find no way through third-placed Newcastle United in a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Victory would have given Arsenal a 10-point lead but they had to make do with a point against a rock-solid Newcastle who defended superbly to remain unbeaten since August.

The closest the hosts came to breaking the deadlock was in the 87th minute when Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made a great save to keep out a low shot by Eddie Nketiah while Arsenal also had a vociferous late penalty claim waved away.

Newcastle, who have the stingiest defence in the top flight this season, were content to sit deep for most of the evening although Joelinton wasted a good opportunity before the break.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

55 mins: Chance! There’s a bit of space that opens up on the left side of the pitch that Zinchenko takes the ball into. He threads it up to Xhaka who quickly moves the ball across to Odegaard.

As he does so often when Arsenal are under pressure, Odegaard controls the ball and lets fly from the edge of the box. However, this time he lifts his effort well over the crossbar.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

51 mins: There’s a bit more bite to Newcastle since the restart with the Magpies hurrying Arsenal in the middle of the pitch and making it difficult for them to feed the ball up to their front men.

Joelinton receives the ball and is hit by Odegaard’s tackle leaving his knee to jar before he hits the deck. A check over by the physios and he’s okay to play on.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

48 mins: Granit Xhaka needs to be wary. He’s already been shown a yellow card and gives Callum Wilson a slight push in the back knocking the Newcastle forward to ground.

The referee awards the free kick but decides not to punish Xhaka any further. Trippier’s delivery picks out Schar who nods his effort onto the top of the goal.

Second half: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Arsenal get the ball rolling once again at the Emirates Stadium. This game is delicately poised and could yet go either way. Oleksandr Zinchenko slips a pass into the left side of the box for Eddie Nketiah but his cutback doesn’t reach Martin Odegaard and Newcastle clear their lines.

Half-time: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

45+2 mins: Nothing the separate the two teams as they head into the break. Arsenal came out of the tracks rapidly but Newcastle managed to keep them at bay and cause the match to become a scrappy midfield battle.

Yellow cards have bee more prevalent than clear cut chances and as things stand the match remains all square.
