England have been left with a mountain to climb to regain the Women’s Ashes after Australia seized the upper hand in the multi-format series by triumphing in the lone Test.

Resuming on 116 for five in pursuit of 268 on a final day where Trent Bridge threw open its gates free of charge, England subsided to 178 all out inside 90 minutes despite a defiant 54 from Danni Wyatt.

Wily off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner’s eight for 66 saw her walk away with a 12-wicket match haul as Australia claimed an 89-run victory to collect four all-important points ahead of the ODIs and T20s.

If England are to retrieve the urn for the first time since 2015 they will have to prevail in five of the six white-ball contests against the ODI and T20 world champions, with two points per win on offer.

Follow all the action from the Women’s Ashes, below:

England 142-6 (33.3), Wyatt 33, Jones 0, Garth 1-22 (6.3) - target 268

Change of bowling for Australia as Kim Garth replaces Tahlia McGrath.

Danni Wyatt pulls her away for one first up to bring Amy Jones back on strike. Jones strides forward and blocks confidently.

A shortish delivery is flapped into the covers but Jones can’t find the gap.

England 141-6 (33), Wyatt 32, Jones 0, Gardner 4-44 (12) - target 268

Amy Jones is the new batter for England. She needs to bed in with Danni Wyatt and knock of the majority of these remaining runs. This partnership will determine who wins this match.

Wicket! Kate Cross ct Alyssa Healy b Ashleigh Gardner 13 (23), England 141-6 (32.3)

Got her! Kate Cross, maybe fuelled by a bit of confidence, attempts to drive Ash Gardner away through the offside and feathers an edge through to Alyssa Healy behind the stumps.

Australia have their first wicket of the day. They need four more to win.

England 141-5 (32.2), Wyatt 32, Cross 13, Gardner 3-44 (11.2) - target 268

Danni Wyatt is confident on Kate Cross’ batting skills. She’s blocks the ball into the offside and calls her through for one.

Close! Cross looks to cut Gardner away and finds a thick edge. It flies wide of second slip and brings Cross two more.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:16

England 138-5 (32), Wyatt 31, Cross 11, McGrath 1-24 (10) - target 268

England scored off five of the six balls in that over. The final delivery pins Cross on the pads but the umpire isn’t interested in the Australian appeal.

Six runs from the over. Great start from England.

England 136-5 (31.3), Wyatt 30, Cross 10, McGrath 1-22 (9.3) - target 268

Smart work from Cross who tries to guide the ball into the legside. It comes off her thigh pad but gets her up the other end.

McGrath’s line isn’t the greatest here as Wyatt flicks her through square leg for two more before a punch into the gap a point brings one.

Runs are coming for England.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:12

England 132-5 (31), Wyatt 27, Cross 10, Gardner 3-41 (11) - target 268

Five runs from the over! Cross guides one to third man and takes a single before Wyatt drives into the gap at cover for two more.

England need 136 runs to win.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:10

England 129-5 (30.3), Wyatt 25, Cross 9, Gardner 3-38 (10.3) - target 268

Another thick edge brings Kate Cross a couple of runs. She’ll want to hang around for a while to help out Danni Wyatt.

Ash Gardner is throwing the ball wide though and looking for spin. It’s not the easiest of challenges for Cross who is primarily a bowler.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:09

England 127-5 (30), Wyatt 25, Cross 7, McGrath 1-19 (9) - target 268

A couple of times, Danni Wyatt goes for an expansive drive and twice the ball bounces past the outside edge. It’s a nervy feeling watching her play and miss.

That doesn’t stop her though. Wyatt goes after another wide one and flays it over the offside to collect a boundary! Four runs.

Nice shot from Wyatt.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:07

England 123-5 (29.3), Wyatt 21, Cross 7, McGrath 1-15 (8.3) - target 268

Danni Wyatt is being watchful this morning. Tahlia McGrath is given the ball at the other end and finds a touch of moevement through the air.

It’s swinging away from the right-hander but the pace is gentle and there’s not much off the pitch. Three dot balls to start the over.
