England have been left with a mountain to climb to regain the Women’s Ashes after Australia seized the upper hand in the multi-format series by triumphing in the lone Test.

Resuming on 116 for five in pursuit of 268 on a final day where Trent Bridge threw open its gates free of charge, England subsided to 178 all out inside 90 minutes despite a defiant 54 from Danni Wyatt.

Wily off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner’s eight for 66 saw her walk away with a 12-wicket match haul as Australia claimed an 89-run victory to collect four all-important points ahead of the ODIs and T20s.

If England are to retrieve the urn for the first time since 2015 they will have to prevail in five of the six white-ball contests against the ODI and T20 world champions, with two points per win on offer.

Follow all the action from the Women’s Ashes, below:

England 156-7 (38.3), Wyatt 42, Ecclestone 1, Gardner 5-51 (14.3) - target 268

Ecclestone is handy with the bat. So much so that Wyatt takes a single of Gardner’s first delivery.

Ecclestone then prods the ball intothe legside but the Aussies got excited as the ball kept low. They’ll be happy to see this variable bounce.

A thick edge brings England’s left-arm spinner a single to get her off the mark.

England 154-7 (38), Wyatt 41, Ecclestone 0, Garth 1-29 (9) - target 268

Sophie Ecclestone is left with two deliveries to see out from Kim Garth’s ninth over which she does without too much trouble. Three runs from the over, England need to keep chipping away at this total.

England 153-7 (37.3), Wyatt 40, Ecclestone 0, Garth 1-28 (8.3) - target 268

Sophie Ecclestone is England’s new batter. She needs to hang around for a while but has a tendancy to get a little excited if she starts scoring runs quickly.

Kim Garth continues and gets one to dart past Danni Wyatt’s edge. Wyatt is the key wicket now. She needs to score most of the remaining runs for England.

Wyatt pushes one into the legside and collects two.

Wicket! Amy Jones st Alyssa Healy b Ashleigh Gardner 4 (15), England 151-7 (36.4)

Huge moment! Jones comes down the track to Gardner again. This time she misses the ball and can’t get back into her crease in time.

There was a little fumble from Alyssa Healy but the Aussie captain whips off the bails and Jones has to go.

Gardner has five wickets in the innings now too.

England 151-6 (36.3), Wyatt 38, Jones 4, Gardner 4-49 (13.3) - target 268

Oh hello! Amy Jones misses out on a short and edges it into her own pads. That got Australia excited for a heartbeat but nothing comes from it.

The next delivery sees Jones dance down the track and smash Gardner over the infield for four runs over cover. What a way to get off the mark.

England’s 150 comes up.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:35

England 147-6 (36), Wyatt 38, Jones 0, Garth 1-26 (8) - target 268

England have scored 31 runs so far this morning which is good going considering they have already lost one wicket. They need a further 121 runs to win.

Things will get nervous for the visitors if England can get the required runs under 100.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:32

England 147-6 (35.3), Wyatt 38, Jones 0, Garth 1-26 (7.3) - target 268

Shot! There’s a touch of width on offer from Kim Garth and Danni Wyatt guides here away to the third man boundary for four!

Another expansive drive hits the fielder at gully this time and denies Wyatt another four runs.

Garth then tightens up and targets the stumps. She forces Wyatt onto the back foot and into a solid block.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:30

England 143-6 (35), Wyatt 34, Jones 0, Gardner 4-45 (13) - target 268

Another over comes and goes with just a single. Amy Jones could do with a score here. Her test average of 15 is well below what she is capable of and this situation needs someone to hang in alongside Danni Wyatt.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:28

England 143-6 (34.3), Wyatt 34, Jones 0, Gardner 4-45 (12.3) - target 268

Wyatt is picking up runs where they come. She cuts the ball away for one to the fielder at deep point. Jones continues her watchful start.

She’s trying to smother any spin Gardner is getting.

Mike Jones26 June 2023 11:27

England 142-6 (34), Wyatt 33, Jones 0, Garth 1-22 (7) - target 268

Australia keep the pressure on as Amy Jones tries to get into her innings. Just the one from that over.

Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer and Lauren Bell are the batters still to come.
