From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. England have already crashed out of the Cricket World Cup, which was sealed by the 33-run defeat to Australia, but restored a small amount of pride with a 160-run win over the Netherlands.

That will hopefully have restored some pride to a side that hit rock bottom during the defeat to Pat Cummins’ side, and it has kept them in the hunt for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, with only the top eight qualifying for that event.

The victory over the Netherlands has moved England from the foot of the table into seventh place.

There will be plenty of time after the tournament for a full analysis of how England’s title defence could go so disastrously wrong with very few warning signs before the squad departed for India, but for now there is a chance to qualify for the next ICC event, with a game against Pakistan to come on 11 November.

284-6 (46) Stokes 82, Woakes 36

The previous over was the best in the World Cup so far for England with 24 from it. van Beek can also only bowl two successive wides at the start of the next.

Stokes is struggling between the wickets here as he often does with that on-going left knee problem. Five wides brings more welcome runs for England, that last over really seems to have shifted the momentum.

There is a fourth wide in the over, and 14 runs from it.

England 270-6 (45) Stokes 80, Woakes 32

Woakes took a single off the first ball of the over to bring Stokes on strike to face Dutt’s final over.

And he does go for it, a boundary into the off side takes England past the 250 mark.

He follows it up with a fortunate six over the leg side, the fielder almost got there but could only tip it over the rope.

Two balls later he goes for a reverse sweep, misses it and falls over and the Netherlands have reviewed...but survives with a murmur on the snicko leading the third umpire to believe there was a bottom edge.

The next ball is a high no ball that Stokes makes no mistakes dispatching over the rope for six, and Dutt will have to bowl it again.

And that one goes for six too! 24 runs from the over!

England 245-6 (44) Stokes 58, Woakes 31

This pair are still going and it will be interesting to see when they really start to go for it.

England will want to get as close to 300 runs as they can.

Englnad 239-6 (43) Stokes 54, Woakes 29

Stokes brings up his half century with a huge six over midwicket, it has been an important innings for England and helped steady the ship while the other wickets tumbled.

A better over from England, 10 runs from it.

England 229-6 (42) Stokes 46, Woakes 27

A tight over with just four runs from it.

England 225-6 (41) Stokes 45, Woakes 24

Stokes has been hit in a sensitive area there! But after a moment to breathe he is okay to continue.

Woakes has two fours from the over.

England 215-6 (40) Stokes 45, Woakes 14

Stokes is inching towards his half century here, but there is plenty of time to accelerate later in the innings, if England can keep wickets in hand until the final six overs or so.

Eight runs from that over is an improvement for England.

England 204-6 (38) Stokes 41, Woakes 7

The pair at the crease have just kept knocking the ball around, and there is still a long way to go in this innings and this match.

England 200-6 (37) Stokes 40, Woakes 4

Stokes and Woakes have a rebuilding job to do here. They will want to bat out the overs and see England over the line, if they can do so, the runs will come.

But all of England’s batters have struggled to remain at the crease for any substantial period of time throughout the tournament.

The run rate, which had been up around seven an over has just dropped to under six, but the 200 is up.

Wicket! Ali out for 4! - England 192-6

Ali has absorbed pressure for a while but goes for a big shot and was caught be De Leede at long off.

England have lost their sixth wicket with more than 14 wickets still remaining in the innings.
