Follow day 10 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with 45 gold medals up for grabs
A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.
Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.
Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.
Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.
In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Kiplangat and Simbu have taken off with around 14km to go. This will be the battle for gold and they have a 30-second lead or so over those behind. Kiplangat, the Ugandan, looks to be in the stronger shape.
Kenya’s Githae has also edged ahead of Adams in the battle for bronze but the Australian will not be giving up the fight based on what we have seen so far today.

England’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the women’s rugby sevens were put to an end after defeat to Canada yesterday in the pool phase.
England have been beaten by New Zealand this morning and it means the semi-final line-up is now complete, with Canada facing Fiji and New Zealand taking on Australia.

Adams continues to battle on, but the Australian is now grasping at the tails of Githae, Kiplangat and Simbu, who took off when the course hit an uphill slope.
This is remarkable grit from the Australian and he manages to haul himself back into the lead group.
Lots of children are running along the road as the course makes its way through some residential streets.

We’re an hour into the men’s marathon and Australia’s Liam Adams has led the way throughout, and in quite a unique, almost jittery, running style. We then quickly reach the halfway point in 65 minutes - so we’re on course for a 2:10ish time.
The pack behind him have allowed a gap, so far. Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu and Hamisi Athumani Misai are there, along with Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat in fourth and Kenya’s Jonathan Kipleting Korir and Michael Mugo Githae.

Alex Yee revealed his Commonwealth Games gold was the best moment of his career to date but admitted the controversial finish to the men’s triathlon was “a shame”.
Sutton Park played host as Olympic silver medallist Yee made up 15 seconds on the run to catch and eclipse his great rival and world No 1 Hayden Wilde, giving Team England a golden hello on the opening day of action in Birmingham.
However, the New Zealander could still be upgraded to gold alongside Yee with an appeal pending after he served a controversial 10-second penalty for unclipping his helmet before racking his bike that deprived fans of a scintillating sprint finish.
With the process expected to take up to 30 days, Yee faces a lengthy wait to see if he will be joined on the top spot of the podium and said: “I’m sorry for Hayden that it happened but I don’t know anything more about it.
“Everyone wants to see a sprint finish and an exciting race. At the top of the hill when I caught him, I said, ‘Sorry you’ve got a penalty mate – it’s rubbish’.
“We want to race the race the hard way and the honest way, so it’s a shame but at the same time that was probably the best moment of my career so far.”

David Weir, the six-time Olympic champion whose bid to win a second Commonwealth Games gold was wrecked by a puncture today, spoke to the BBC:
“I think I’m just not getting the right luck in major championships at the moment, since Rio to be honest. The last 10 weeks of training have been the best in years. I had a lot of confidence coming into the race. I was thinking of bringing a spare (tyre) to the race today. I’ve never brought a spare tyre in my life. But I thought if I bring a spare I’m going to jinx myself. I even said to my wife, if I get a big lead today I’ll have time to change my tyre.
“That’s racing for you. I’ll know for next time.”

Johnboy Smith, the new Commonwealth champion in the men’s wheelchair: “It’s surreal, mate. I’ve worked so, so hard for this. I’ve got to thank my team behind me, my family. I’m not going to lie, whoever came up with that course I might take them to court and sue them, that was so, so hard. But I’ve been training non-stop for 16 months for this. Starting at 4am. But it paid off.
“It’s bittersweet for me. Dave got a flat, I pressume? He had me. By mile six he dropped me. Then I turned around I assumed he had a puncture. The better man didn’t win today. He deserves gold and I should have got silver. But these things happen. Your majesty, if you’re watching, David Weir deserves a knighthood. Make it happen.”

It’s gold for England’s Johnboy Smith in the men’s wheelchair marathon! There was heartbreak for David Weir after he suffered an early puncture that wrecked his hopes, by Smith takes full advantage by powering to a clear victory.
Scotland’s John Frame takes silver and England’s Simon Lawson wins bronze. Weir would come home in sixth.
Sophie Unwin left in tears after not getting a bronze medal for finishing third
England para-cyclist Sophie Unwin was left in tears after being told she would not get a bronze medal for finishing third in the women’s tandem B sprint at the Commonwealth Games.
Unwin, piloted by Georgia Holt, beat Scotland’s former Paralympic runner Libby Clegg, piloted by Jenny Holl, for third place in the event and initial results showed the 28-year-old had won bronze.
Five teams had originally entered the event but only four took to the start, which meant that under competition rules only the gold and silver medals would be awarded.
However, it appears that was not properly communicated, with big screens in the velodrome advertising Unwin’s ride against Clegg as a bronze medal race, and Unwin appearing on the Commonwealth Games website as a bronze medal winner following the win.
Unwin and Holt – who won Paralympic road race silver and individual pursuit bronze in Tokyo and also have a world title – were told to cut short their post-race interviews in order to go to the podium, but then emerged in tears after finding out they were not eligible to receive a medal.
