Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Johnboy Smith had no interest in reading the script as he took advantage of David Weir’s woes to claim wheelchair marathon gold at the Commonwealth Games.

On a twisting turning circuit around Birmingham, which included a series of punishing climbs, six-time Paralympic champion Weir looked to be coasting to victory.

But an untimely puncture allowed Smith to catch him with just six miles remaining, upgrading the silver medal he won four years ago on the Gold Coast.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Swimming

In the first battle of the week between Duncan Scott and Tom Dean in the men’s 200m freestyle heats, it’s the Scottish swimmer who clocks the fastest time with a 1:47.16.

Neither went fastest overall, though. That was Australia’s Elijah Winnington with a 1:46.87.

In any case, both Scott and Dean are safely through to the final - there’s no semi-finals in this event - and they will go head to head tonight.

What a race that should be.

“I had no idea where I’m at,” Peaty tells the BBC. “I still don’t know. I’m blowing out cobwebs and have only raced twice this year. It’s different but I felt alright.

“The foot feels right in the water. You don’t need to be 100% in the heats but we’ll improve from here. Hopefully tonight it’s even better.”

Now here is Adam Peaty, taking to the pool for the first time at the Commonwealth Games and just 10 weeks after breaking his foot.

He’s in the fifth and final heat of the 100m breaststroke, and he gets to the split in front before holding on to his lead and clocking a time of 59.9 seconds.

Australia’s Sam Williamson was closing in over the final few metres but considering that was his first race experience, it’s a handy start.

And still, it’s the fastest qualifying time of the heats and, as you would expect, he will move into the semi-finals as the one to beat.

Neah Evans had set the standard, but she is just edged out of the gold medal race in the 3000m individual pursuit by New Zealand’s Bryony Botha and Australia’s Maeve Plouffe, who both set Games records.

Evans will instead race Australia’s Sarah Roy for bronze later this afternoon. England’s Josie Knight just missed out on qualification for the finals, finishing fifth.

Crisis averted.

Kiplangat arrives safely in Victoria Square and gets to soak in the applause of the crowd as he cruises towards the Commonwealth Games gold.

And there is it! He gets down to his knees and gives thanks, after setting a time of 2:10:55.

A brilliant moment for Uganda, too.

Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu comes home 94 seconds later to take silver and Kenya’s Michael Githae takes bronze.

He was pushed all the way by the brilliant Liam Adams, he improves upon his fifth place finish on the Gold Coast. If there was a combativity award, he would win it.

Oh no! Victor Kiplangat turned the wrong way as he was closing in on victory! He ran about 200m down the road before he was caught and told to turn around!

Thankfully, he was clear of second place, and was not closing in on the record. Had he been, that would have been devastating.

The action at the velodrome on day two is well underway - and the performance so far has just been produced by Scotland’s Neah Evans in the 3000m individual pursuit heats.

She sets a Commonwealth Games record in her heat to shoot to the top of the standings, laying down a big statement ahead of the medal races later on.

Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat has now burst clear of the pack as he enters the final few kilometres and is closing in on not only the gold medal but a Commonwealth Games record as well.

Kiplangat is into the city centre and will twist and turn through Birmingham’s streets before finishing in Victoria Square.

While the men remain on the course, the women’s marathon is also underway. Sinead Diver leads out a trio of Australian runners at the head of the pack. Georgina Schwiening, who has a history of also competing in triathlon and ultrarunning, is representing England after qualifying for the start line.
