Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Weightlifting

England’s Zoe Smith is going for gold in the -64kg event and Northern Ireland’s Caroline Doyle tops the table currently having lifted 98kg but there’s still a long way to go.

Chris Murray’s victory in the men’s 81kg category earlier today has already earned England a gold. Can Zoe Smith match him?

What a game this is in Pool A between Scotland and South Africa

Scotland turned things around with three goals in six minutes from Andrew McConnell, Alan Forsyth and Cammy Golden but South Africa’s Nqobile Ntuli found an equaliser to put the scores back on level terms at 3-3.

Just before the hooter sounded to end the third quarter Struan Walker put Scotland on the front foot once again and they lead 4-3 with 15 minutes to play.

Chris Murray hopes to have double cause for celebration after weightlifting gold

England’s Chris Murray won weightlifting gold in Birmingham and then vowed not to tell girlfriend and fellow competitor Holly O’Shea about his Commonwealth Games glory.

Murray won the men’s 81kg weightlifting final after Australia’s Kyle Bruce and Canadian Nicolas Vachon failed to overtake him in dramatic circumstances.

But Murray’s thoughts instantly turned to girlfriend O’Shea, who was Gibraltar’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony and is competing at these Games in the women’s 71kg category on Monday night.

A word on Shannon Archer. She’s just secured Scotland’s first ever medal in the vault and artistic gymnastics. There are tears in the eyes of her and her Scottish teammates.

Great scenes.

Joe Fraser wins pommel horse gold!

It was an insane routine in all honesty. 14.833 under the pressure from the home crowd and going up against the reigning Commonwealth champion.

Northern Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan picks up silver but James Hall finishes fifth.

She’s had a long wait and needs to record at least 13.050 to win the bronze.

Here we go, it’s a good vault from Archer... what’s her score?

Jeremiah Azu eyes ‘big opportunity’ to chase down Wales medal in 100m

British champion Jeremiah Azu insists his Commonwealth Games target is to win a medal and not prove a point after missing out on 100 metres selection at the World Championships.

Welshman Azu upset English pair Reece Prescod, a European silver medallist, and Zharnel Hughes in June to win the 100m at the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester.

But the 21-year-old’s time of 9.90 seconds was wind-assisted, and Azu had to settle for a place on the Great Britain relay squad at the World Championships in Oregon.

Hall scores a 13.433! That puts him in third place with two gymnasts to go. He could cling onto bronze.

Great routine from James Hall! He had a separation in the legs which will bring down his score but the difficulty could be enough to earn the Englishman a medal in the pommel horse.

Can he beat Rhys McClenaghan‘s score?
