Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Oh wow.

Canada’s Felix Dolci absolutely nails his routine on the rings and his dismount is close to perfect. Courtney Tulloch is guaranteed a medal but now it is all about what colour.

Is Dolci’s effort enough to push him down to silver?

Fenton is the defending champion and the highest qualifier on the bars. She produces yet another exceptional routine and that could be enough to win her gold.

It is!

13.900 for the Englishwoman and she’ll take home the gold!

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

Australia’s Georgia Godwin is on for a hat-trick of golds at these Games as she leaps into first place on the uneven bars with a score of 13.5.

Georgia-Mae Fenton is up next for England and she’s got the ability to beat that score.

Courtney Tulloch records a 14.400! He’s currently in the gold medal position, can he hold onto it?

It’s a good looking routine!

Courtney Tulloch was brilliant through the swings, strong in the holds and landed a decent dismount. He looks pleased with the effort but we’ll have to wait for the scores.

14.266 is tough to beat but if anyone can do it, it’ll be the Englishman.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

Joe Fraser nails his routine on the high rings for England and comes away with a score of 14.100 to move into the lead. He doesn’t stay there long though as Canada’s Chris Kaji puts in a massive 14.266.

Can the Commonwealth champion Courtney Tulloch beat that?

Back in the arena and there’s some interest for England. Ondine Achampong records a 13.433 on the uneven to move level with South Africa’s Caitlin Rooskrantz.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Track cycling

England’s Hayden Norris is the last of the riders from the home nations to go in this time trial and records a very decent time of 1:01.285 to move into third place but knocking teammate Ethan Vernon out of the medals.

Thomas Cornish of Australia is the current leader on 1:00.036.

Next up is New Zealand’s Nicholas Kergozou de la Boessiere... he’s quick. Very quick, and Hayden Norris is knocked out of the podium places.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Track cycling

Lots of action happening in the men’s 1,000m time trial on the last day in the velodrome.

After 13 riders, England’s Ethan Vernon sits second behind Australia’s sprint champion Matthew Richardson with Joe Holt of Wales in third.

There are still seven riders to go though.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Men’s hockey

South Africa are back in front!

Scotland see a penalty corner saved by goalkeeper Gowan Jones and South Africa quickly go up the other end and Matthew Guise-Brown rifles a shot into the top corner of the Scotland goal.

Taine Paton then takes a shot from the shooting circle and as Scottish captain Alan Forsyth tries to make the block, it bounces up off his stick allowing Paton to knocks it over the goalkeeper.

South Africa lead 5-4.
