Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Daryll Neita relishing prospect of 100m gold battle with Elaine Thompson-Herah

England’s Daryll Neita declared she is ready to challenge Elaine Thompson-Herah for Commonwealth Games gold.

The 25-year-old clocked 11.02 seconds to win her 100m heat at the Alexander Stadium on Tuesday.

She reached Wednesday’s semi-final ahead of an expected final showdown with reigning Olympic 100m champion Thompson-Herah.

With Dina Asher-Smith out after suffering a hamstring injury at last month’s World Championships the spotlight is on Neita who is primed to challenge for top spot.

England’s Gemma Howell takes the silver medal in the women’s -63kg after she is forced to tap in the golden score period of an incredible contest with Canada’s Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

European champion Howell was arguably the better of the two fighters yet ultimately Beauchemin-Pinard weathered the storm and takes the gold.

A fantastic contest.

Laura Kenny backed to achieve more Olympic success after she considered quitting

Great Britain performance director Stephen Park has backed Laura Kenny to achieve more Olympic success after the five-time gold medallist this week revealed she had considered quitting the sport.

Kenny won scratch race gold for England at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, and then admitted she had wondered if it might be her final race after a terrible period for her personally.

The 30-year-old had planned a second child with husband Jason but suffered a miscarriage in November and then had one of her fallopian tubes removed in January due to an ectopic pregnancy.

Kenny has spoken to Park about possibly taking some time out, and it seems likely she will miss next week’s European Championships, which would in turn put an appearance at October’s World Championships in doubt.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Athletics

The heptathlon also continues tonight with England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson having a narrow 17-point lead after two events.

The 29-year-old, who won the 2019 world title, was fifth after an underwhelming 13.83 seconds in the 100m hurdles but she topped the high-jump rankings with a clearance of 1.84m to give her 2032 points in total.

Australia’s Taneille Crase is with 2015 and England’s Holly Mills third on 2000 points. The shot put and 200m events take place this evening.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Coming up later

Tonight’s evening session promises to be a belter.

There are six athletics gold medals on offer at the Alexander Stadium with England’s Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw in women’s pole vault action, Sophie Hahn is one of the favourites to take the victory in the women’s T37/38 100m, and Hannah Cockroft could challenge in the women’s T33/34 100m.

Over at the aquatics centre Adam Peaty will be hoping win his first Commonwealth gold in the men’s 50m breaststroke final especially after finishing out of the medals over 100m on Sunday.

The men’s 100m butterfly final includes defending champion Chad le Clos of South Africa and England’s James Guy which should be a great battle for the medals.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Lawn bowls

This is developing into a very good gold medal match.

Australia’s Damien Delgado and Chris Flavel led 4-2 in the Para-lawn bowls men’s pairs B6-B8 showdown but Scotland’s Garry Brown and Kevin Wallace have pulled it back to move 5-4 in front after six ends.

Heather Knight remains a doubt for England ahead of rest of Commonwealth Games

Heather Knight’s availability for the rest of the Commonwealth Games is in fresh doubt as England moved to the brink of the semi-finals with a 26-run victory over South Africa.

The England captain had an injection in her hip in a bid to be fit for cricket’s return to the Games after a 24-year wait but she has been sidelined for her side’s two opening Group B wins at Edgbaston.

She is also likely to miss England’s final group game against New Zealand on Thursday and is nervously awaiting the results of a scan which may determine whether she can participate in the finals stages.
