Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022: Swimming

It’s gold for Brodie Williams in the men’s 200m backstroke final! The Englishman takes the win ahead of Bradley Woodward while there is heartbreak for Luke Greenbank, who misses out on the podium.

“I just tried to work the last 50 and I am lucky to get the touch,” he tells the BBC. “It’s a shame to not have Luke on the podium. He has been the standard bearer for backstroke in Britain.”

‘Jake is the wonderkid’: Joe Fraser hails fellow Commonwealth Games golden boy Jarman

Joe Fraser hailed his “wonderkid” team-mate Jake Jarman after the England duo wrapped up their artistic gymnastics campaign with a glittering seven-gold total haul on the concluding day of apparatus finals at sold-out Arena Birmingham.

Jarman’s soaring triumph in the vault final made him the first English athlete to win four gold medals at the same Games since shooter Mick Gault in 1998, whilst Fraser, nursing a fractured foot, added to his previous success with a dominant display on the parallel bars.

A further gold on floor for Alice Kinsella, rebounding from the disappointment of missing out on the podium in the earlier beam final, ensured England would end a hugely successful campaign having claimed 10 of the 14 gold medals on offer.

Former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s Commonwealth medal dream ended by body cramps

After a torturous journey that included sleeping on the streets and the contemplation of committing suicide, former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s dream of winning a Commonwealth Games medal for England was ended by his entire body cramping.

It had been eight years since Tchatchet last competed at these Games, then in the colours of his native Cameroon before he sneaked away from Glasgow 2014 with just a pair of shoes and a weightlifting belt to his name.

So began the long process of Tchatchet’s path to UK nationality, with his application for asylum approved in 2016 and full citizenship only approved at the start of this year.

That final step allowed the 27-year-old to compete for England in Birmingham – the city he has made his home – but there was no happy ending as cramps struck right from the start of the men’s 96kg final.

Tchatchet still managed to snatch 158kg to leave him in the silver medal position at the halfway point, but he collapsed after his first clean and jerk attempt and two more failures prevented him registering a final total.

Tom Dean finds silver lining at Commonwealth Games

Double Olympic champion Tom Dean is unfazed by his run of second-place finishes at the Commonwealth Games after Kyle Chalmers claimed the men’s 100 metres freestyle title.

Chalmers put a finger to his lips after clocking 47.51 seconds to win the final, seemingly a gesture in response to reports of a fractious fallout with Australian team-mates Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon.

Dean was runner-up in 47.89secs, edging Scotland’s Duncan Scott into third in 48.27s, while the Londoner later collected his fifth silver in recent days in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

Tolchard missed the final bowl as Salmon and Breen secured Wales’ second gold medal of Birmingham 2022.

Adam Peaty backtracks after saying he was ‘not bothered’ by Commonwealth Games

Adam Peaty has backtracked on remarks to the BBC in which he suggested he was “not bothered” about the Commonwealth Games.

Hours after a shock fourth-place finish in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games, ending an unbeaten eight-year record in his favourite event, Peaty was back in the pool. The 27-year-old was joint fastest in the morning heats of the 50m discipline but a semi-final time of 27.03 seconds was two hundredths of a second slower than Australia’s Sam Williamson in the evening.

Afterwards he told the BBC: “I’m not bothered about it. Commonwealths to me... in the grand scheme of things, it’s about two years’ time [the Paris 2024 Olympics]. That’s no disrespect but I’m still four weeks into my programme [after coming back from the broken foot]. I can’t put too many expectations on myself. It’s only a 50m breaststroke. I’m not going to overthink it.”

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Judo

England’s Gemma Howell won silver in the women’s -63kg and spoke to the BBC following her tense match with Canada’s Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

“That final fight was so close I know I could have had it and that makes it frustrating.” she said, “A big part of my story is the 10 operations and the ups and the downs and that [winning silver] makes it all worth it.”
