Jake Paul says people don't think he's a 'real person' ahead of Tommy Fury fight

Jake Paul beat Nate Diaz by unanimous decision in their highly-anticipated boxing match in Dallas as he knocked down the mixed martial arts star en route to victory.

Diaz was fighting for the first time since leaving the UFC and proved an awkward opponent on his boxing debut in front of a Texas crowd that was hugely in his favour, although he lacked the power to really hurt his heavily-favoured opponent.

YouTuber Paul knocked him down in the fifth round of their 10-round contest but Diaz got back to his feet and made the final bell. However, the judges’ scorecards showed the relatively one-sided nature of the victory as he prevailed 97-92, 98-91, 98-91.

With his record as a professional boxer now at 7-1, attention turns to Paul’s next contest. He has offered Diaz $10m for a fight under MMA rules, with the former UFC star considering the offer, while a rematch to avenge his sole loss earlier this year against Tommy Fury – half-brother of world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson – could also be a possibility.

Relive the fight below.

Jake Paul’s career so far

YouTube star Jake Paul has quickly gained experience and slowly earned respect as a boxer in recent years, going 6-1 as a professional.

Prior to his points loss to Tommy Fury in February, the American was unbeaten, and he holds a decision win against UFC legend Anderson Silva as well as knockouts of former UFC champion Tyron Woodley and MMA star Ben Askren.

Can he add another UFC star to his list of defeated opponents?

Will Diaz defeat Jake Paul?

The career of Nate Diaz is a fascinating one. He’s been fighting for most of his life, inside and outside of various rings and cages.

Diaz has fought 34 times professionally in a cage, mainly within the UFC, and more than a few times unprofessionally on the streets. For years, he has also fought the negative opinions that surround combat sports and the judgement that brings on him and his choice of career.

He has fought against the UFC’s method of doing business, and now at 38-years-old and having achieved icon status he is readyy to earn the rewards of all that struggle.

His professional boxing debut against Jake Paul tonight looks set to earn him a tidy sum as the match-up is a genuine curiosity-based pay-per-view.

Paul has shown he is a capable boxer but Diaz has fought for UFC world titles. Who will win this one? Will Diaz dominate as he probably should? Will the restrictions of boxing play into Paul’s hands?

We’ll find out soon enough.

Pre-match thoughts from Jake Paul

"My last fight didn’t end the way I wanted, but the result was the best thing that could have happened to my professional boxing aspirations,” said Jake Paul ahead of this clash against Nate Diaz.

"Now, the world thinks I am vulnerable, when all I am is more focused than ever.

"Nate Diaz is considered one of the most bad-ass fighters of all time, but he and his team have been running their mouths for too long."

How Jake Paul’s last fight turned out

Tommy Fury beats Jake Paul in long-awaited fight in Saudi Arabia

Tommy Fury edged Jake Paul via split decision in a narrow victory in Saudi Arabia on Sunday night.

Both fighters had a point docked during the eight-round boxing match at the Diriyah Arena, and Fury was dropped to a knee in the final round, but the Briton did just enough to win the long-awaited fight.

The bout had fallen through twice before – once in December 2021 and again last August – but finally played out on Sunday, with both fighters having promised a knockout in the build-up. Neither YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul nor Fury – half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson – could find the finish, however, as the main-event contest went the distance.

Good evening

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s coverage of Jake Paul vs Nate Diaz.

The Problem Child gets back in the ring this evening following his first professional loss to Tommy Fury earlier this year. Fury won the fight on a split decision and talks of a rematch where quickly silenced when Paul signed on to fight former UFC star Nate Diaz.

Diaz rose to fame in 2016 by submitting Conor McGregor in the octogon but never won a UFC title. He left the sport in September last year and is now looking to inflict a second boxing defeat on Jake Paul tonight.

The fight takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas and will be a late one for UK fans with the main card starting around 1am and the main event ring walks expected close to 4am.

We’ll have all the updates and action from the undercard fights as well as build up to the main event so stick around to see who emerges triumphant.
