Re-live the action as Canelo Alvarez fought Jaime Munguia in an all-Mexican, undisputed title fight
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained the undisputed super-middleweight titles on Saturday, dropping and outpointing Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas.
The Mexicans clashed on Cinco de Mayo weekend, with Alvarez, 33, refusing to pass the torch to the younger challenger, 27. Instead, Canelo sealed a unanimous-decision win (117-110, 116-111, 115-112), having troubled Munguia throughout the bout and having dropped the previously unbeaten fighter in round four.
It was a perfect right uppercut that put down Munguia, who had never before hit the canvas, and Canelo pulled ahead from there, after Munguia’s admittedly bright start.
With the result, Canelo moved a step closer to a potential, highly-demanded fight with David Benavidez – though Alvarez played coy on Saturday, when asked about that contest.

The pattern of the fight continues. Some good body work by Figueroa, but it’s not been scintillating action.
OH! Saying that, Figueroa puts down Magdaleno with a body shot right before the bell!! And Magdaleno can’t beat the count!

Round eight
More messy exchanges against the ropes. Figueroa gets a couple of clean hooks in, though – one off each wing.
More hooks from Figueroa. Magdaleno’s offence doesn’t seem to be troubling him.

Round seven
Yet more forward pressure from Figueroa. He smothers Magdaleno against the ropes, and eventually the referee separates the boxers.
It’s become quite a scrappy affair. Figueroa keeps trapping Magdaleno, whose head movement is erratic enough that the exchanges just get frenzied.

Round six
Figueroa corners Magdaleno and lands some clean, straight shots! He’s then warned for catching Magdaleno on the back of the head, though, before he complains that it was Magdaleno’s movement that led to those fouls.
Figueroa marches after Magdaleno but eats a hard uppercut! More good uppercuts from Magdaleno, who is backed up to the ropes. Figueroa elects to throw a series of hooks upstairs.

Round five
More forward pressure from Figueroa, who is getting a bit rough and using his elbows.
Now he’s warned for leading with his head. The action resumes, and he corners Magdaleno again. Magdaleno’s counter shots aren’t quite accurate enough, but he’s able to hold Figueroa to arrest some momentum.

Round four
Figueroa presses forward, switching stances. He burrows hooks into the body of Magdaleno, who’s backed up to the ropes.
Decent, short right hook by Figueroa now. Good activity from him here. Oh... Until now!
He lands a low blow, and Magdaleno hits the canvas! He’s kicking with his legs, writhing in pain, but the referee wants him back up!
Magdaleno is entitled to five minutes to recover, but he’ll resume after about one minute. A hard warning is issued to Figueroa.

Great right hook by Magdaleno at the end of a scrappy exchange!
Figueroa with a decent cross as he closes range. Now he fires off two jabs, but Figueroa is out of range.
Figueroa ends the round with a barrage against Magdaleno in the corner.

Lots of bouncing around by Figueroa early on. He switches stances, then back.
Wild entry from Magdaleno, and he misses with a one-two. He darts in again and really leaves his head hanging in front of Figueroa.

He’s got a cut above his left eye, potentially from a clash of heads...
