Canelo vs Munguia trailer

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained the undisputed super-middleweight titles on Saturday, dropping and outpointing Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas.

The Mexicans clashed on Cinco de Mayo weekend, with Alvarez, 33, refusing to pass the torch to the younger challenger, 27. Instead, Canelo sealed a unanimous-decision win (117-110, 116-111, 115-112), having troubled Munguia throughout the bout and having dropped the previously unbeaten fighter in round four.

It was a perfect right uppercut that put down Munguia, who had never before hit the canvas, and Canelo pulled ahead from there, after Munguia’s admittedly bright start.

With the result, Canelo moved a step closer to a potential, highly-demanded fight with David Benavidez – though Alvarez played coy on Saturday, when asked about that contest.

Re-live Canelo vs Munguia updates and see all results from the undercard, below.

Canelo vs Munguia LIVE: Alvarez looks to build on win over Jermell Charlo

“Nobody can beat this Canelo,” the champion said after easing past Jermell Charlo in September.

“No, [I’m not disappointed that I didn’t get a knockout]. If I don’t get that knockout, I get 12 rounds to show why I’m the better fighter. I’m a strong fighter, I’m a strong man [...] I love boxing so f***ing much. Boxing is my life, and I love it because of my fans, too.

“[On] Cinco de Mayo [I’ll be back]. Whoever, I don’t f***ing care. Viva Mexico!”

Canelo vs Munguia LIVE: Steve Bunce’s main-event preview

Here is a snippet from Steve Bunce’s preview of tonight’s main event...

Canelo Alvarez was an old man in boxing long before his 18th birthday.

Tonight, in Las Vegas, he leads a Mexican festival of fighting when he meets Jaime Munguia over 12 rounds for all four of the super-middleweight championship belts.

Alvarez is still only 33, this will be his 65th fight, it is his 24th world-title fight and he has won world titles at four separate weights. He was just 20 when he won his first world title.

Those would be staggering statistics for any fighter born after 1960, but Alvarez also turned professional at just 15, he fought 21 times before he turned 18 and had his first 12-round title fight when he was just 17.

His record looks like he belongs in the 1930s and not at a time when most good fighters will not even get close to having 35 or 40 fights. In 10 years, Alvarez will feel like a relic, the last of a breed.

Canelo vs Munguia LIVE

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez faces an intriguing test against Jaime Munguia tonight, as he defends the undisputed super-middleweight titles in Las Vegas.

Munguia, 27, is six years Canelo’s junior and enters Vegas undefeated. Last time out, the Tijuana fighter – who has a significant height advantage over Alvarez – stopped John Ryder, sending the Briton into retirement in January.

Canelo also fought Ryder recently, outpointing him in May before cruising past Jermell Charlo in September. Now, the Guadalajaran defends the undisputed belts yet again.
