Trump vows to ‘take other countries’ jobs’ while campaigning in Georgia

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Donald Trump has vowed to take jobs from other countries if he wins the presidency in November through a program of tariff hikes and tax incentives that he believes will encourage foreign companies to relocate production to the US.

The Republican presidential nominee was speaking at a rally in Savannah, Georgia, on Tuesday as part of a week of swing state events.

On Monday night he told a crowd in Pennsylvania that he would be a “protector” for women who “will no longer be thinking about abortion” if he is re-elected.

At the rally in the city of Indiana, scenes turned ugly when the crowd broke out into chants of “send them back” after the former president whipped up the crowd about immigration.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has told Wisconsin Public Radio that she is in favor of axing the Senate filibuster in order to codify abortion protections that were previously guaranteed under Roe v Wade.

The latest Reuters poll has Harris up six points nationally but a Quinnipiac University poll also released today has the candidates neck-and-neck among likely voters.

Here’s my full story on Trump’s admission that he might be “childish” for not liking anyone who doesn’t don’t like him. To be fair, I’m not sure many of us are good at that.

Donald Trump Jr peddles bogus claim that Harris used teleprompter during Oprah event

Some conservatives, including Donald Trump Jr., are boosting an unsubstantiated claim that Vice President Kamala Harris used a teleprompter during her interview with Oprah Winfrey to support their assertion that she is “a fraud.”

On Thursday, Harris sat down with Winfrey for a live event - called “Unite for America” - that brought together a coalition of more than 100 online groups and celebrities who have endorsed her. The vice president spoke about her campaign’s top issues and answered questions from Americans.

But, over the weekend, conservatives capitalized on a three-second video that captured the interview from a different perspective, showing a teleprompter and camera positioned in front of Winfrey.

Ariana Baio has the story.

Project 2025: How it became Trump’s worst nightmare

John Bowden writes:

These days, “Project 2025” is nothing but a dirty word (or pair of words) to staffers on Donald Trump’s third bid for the presidency. After months of negative coverage and attacks from Democrats, Trump and his top aides are both engaged in a conscious effort to distance the former president from the project whenever possible. That effort drew to a heated pitch this summer as top Trump campaign officials Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles released a statement crowing over the resignation of a top Project 2025 operative and declaring the various groups involved with the plan to be speaking on the former president’s behalf without his permission.

This wasn’t supposed to be how the election went at all. The question remains: How did the Heritage Foundation and the other conservative groups behind Project 2025 fumble the bag this badly?

The answer seems obvious: Donald Trump. But that wasn’t obvious to anybody working on the effort.

ICYMI: Mark Robinson sees NC campaign staff quit in droves

Embattled North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson is reportedly down to just a single-digit number of paid campaign staffers after the bulk of his team abandoned his bid for the governor’s office in the wake of a damaging CNN investigation.

Robinson was the focus of an investigation by the network’s KFile unit on Thursday. A report published by CNN revealed an extensive history of comments made on a porn site called “Nude Africa” under an email address and username both known to be linked to him.

The comments, which touched on a wide range of topics, were outrageous and shocking — in one, he apparently referred to himself as a “Black Nazi.”

John Bowden has the story.

‘A person who transitioned'

Trump once again spreads the false claim that Olympic boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting are transgender women, referring to them as "people who transitioned".

"Muhammad Ali would have been scared of this person," Trump said, referring to Khelif. "[Her opponent] didn't know what the hell hit her. It was like a horse. I never saw this before... what happened?"

So far his main themes have been immigration, inflation, the economy, and foreign policy, with a sprinkling of crime and attacks on trans people.

Whitmer labels Trump ‘deranged’ over comments on women and abortion

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is accusing Donald Trump of being “deranged” for his stances on abortion and women.

The comments came in reaction to a Saturday speech where the former president claimed women’s lives had been improved by the end of the constitutional right to an abortion.

“That’s just ludicrous,” Whitmer told CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “This guy just doesn’t understand what the average woman is confronting in her life in this country. How could he? He’s not lived a normal life.”

“He’s just deranged,” Whitmer added.

Josh Marcus reports.

‘Women, we want you to have your beautiful baby'

After telling Kamala Harris that she would be "a disaster to the United States of America" –saying "Kamala, you are fired! Get out, get out!" – Trump pivots to the matter of women.

"I always thought women liked me," he says, to cheers. "I never thought i had a problem. But the fake news keeps saying women don't like me. I don't believe that.

"I make this statement to the great women of our country... I am your protector. I want to be your protector. As president, I have to be your protector.

"I hope you don't make too much of it. I hope the fake news doesn't go 'oh, he wants to be their protector'..."

Under his presidency, he says, "women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free. You will no longer be thinking about abortion."

He then claims that he and the Republican Party are pro-IVF, saying: "We want beautiful babies in our country. We want you to have your beautiful, beautiful, perfect baby. We want those babies, and we need them. And I will protect women at a level never seen before."

'I'm learning a lot about guns'

Trump offers a sanguine and ironical commentary on the two recent assassination attempts against him.

"I learned about AK-47s three weeks ago. That's not a nice one. I'm getting very good at learning about weapons. I'm learning a lot about guns."

That's a reference to the most recent suspected would-be assassin Ryan Routh, who was arrested after fleeing one of Trump's golf courses while carrying an AK-47 style rifle and a GoPro camera.

Later, he claims that when shots were fired at him in nearby Butler he was moving his head to look at an immigration-related chart being held up by a supporter.

"If I didn't look over to the right to see that beautiful graph, I wouldn't be here with you tonight, And that would be very terrible," he said.

"Think of it, Uncle Sam!" (He's talking to someone in the audience who is dressed as Uncle Sam.) "Immigration saved my life. Think of it: immigration saved my life."
