General election 2019: Boris Johnson arrives at Downing Street

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Boris Johnson has said he will make the NHS an "overwhelming priority" during his renewed tenure in No. 10 following a political “earthquake” which which saw Labour support give way top a comfortable Tory majority.

However he has not extended the same olive branch to voters north of the border - telling Nicola Sturgeon he would not lend any support to a second independence referendum.

Meanwhile Jeremy Corbyn has refused to take responsibility for the worst Labour showing since 1935 - blaming Brexit for the party’s devastating defeat.

Tories hold Finchley and Golders Green, with Luciana Berger failing to be elected

The ex-Labour MP – who was one of the foremost breakaway members who joined Change UK – has failed to win the seat as a Liberal Democrat.

If she had won, she would surely have been among the frontrunners to replace Jo Swinson as leader.

Labour wins very slim majority in Sheffield Hallam

The seat – which has had a very odd history over recent years, which have included Nick Clegg's shock defeat to Labour's Jared O'Mara, who then proceeded to run into a variety of issues of his own – was very much in contention this time around. But Labour's Olivia Blake has held onto it for the party, with a majority of just 712 on a turnout of 78.2%.

Boris Johnson speaks to staff at Conservative HQ

In a recording obtained by website Buzzfeed, a jubilant Mr Johnson told aides at Conservative HQ in Westminster: "We must understand now what an earthquake we have created. The way in which we have changed the political map of this country.

"We have to grapple with the consequences of that, we have to change our own party, we have to rise to the level of events, we must... we must answer the challenge that the British people have given us."
